The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #64

WARNING! None of the news or rumors you see here in The Bum’s Rush should be considered FACT until it actually happens. It might never happen. How do you know I’m not just making all this crap up? I could, you know. You’ve been warned!

Ess Dee See See

Some of you may have noticed that comic news has been a little light over the past few weeks. I’ve certainly had trouble finding stories that I find interesting or worthy enough to pass on you, dear reader (it’s all about you). Most of you might already know the reason behind this lack of announcements and hype but for those that don’t allow me to explain.

One word – SDCC (does that count as one word? Isn’t that four letters?). That’s right, the
San Diego Comic-Con, quite possibly the biggest and most popular comic book convention in the country, which takes place July 20 - 23. You see it’s at San Diego that Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse and an army of smaller publishers gather to make their biggest announcements of the year. New creative teams, exclusive contracts, upcoming events, new series, movie deals, toy deals, sex scandals, klingons. SDCC’s got it all.

So it’s really no surprise that most of the big news is being horded and saved, ready to be unleashed on a hungry comic community the weekend after next. By then this column will practically be swimming in a sea of new stories, rumors and jabs at Joe Quesada. But in the meantime where does that leave me (or you for that matter)? What’s a news and rumor column without news and rumors? What will become of the guy what writes it? Why did Pirates of the Caribbean 2 make soooo much money when it was such an awful movie? The people want answers. The people demand satisfaction! And I, being the clever (and devilishly handsome) author of such a column, have a solution! This week let’s talk about…

The House of Bum

Yes, The House of Bum. Residence of yours truly, along with all the other fantastic guys who make up your favorite entertainment studio on the web. As you probably noticed we’re getting bigger all the time, branching out, reaching more people and averting nuclear disaster on a daily basis. Each month the number of visitors continues to grow and we’re getting more attention from fans and creators alike. Instead of outright ignoring us people are beginning to halfway remember our names.

But, never ones to be satiated by a mere modicum of success, Stumblebum Studios continues to expand. We’re constantly looking at ways to improve the site and make it more fun for you… as well as us! Why just this week marks the debut of a brand-new feature column, Don’t Call It A Comeback by Josh Dahl! Josh part of Monolith, LLC., a new publishing company started by Josh, Micah Faulkner and Jason Krause. These three also make up the creative team for Monolith’s main project, a comic called Rapid City. From what I’ve seen so far this book looks like it’s going to be great. Josh has been a supporter of Stumblebum for some time now and was interviewed by our very own Aaron Hall in his weekly column, Ring Psychology, so I’m pretty excited that we are able to welcome him to the Stumblebum Crew (and without our usual trickery or blackmailing techniques I might add). Welcome aboard, Josh. Hope you survive the experience. Haha… nah. Only one guy has died so far.

We’ve also got a new feature interview up with comedian Fran Solomita, who also directed When Stand Up Stood Out, a documentary focusing on the Boston comedy scene in the late 70’s to early 80’s. Our esteemed editor, Dana Place watched the movie and then got the chance to talk with Mr. Solomita. It’s a great interview (probably one of the best we’ve done) and it’ll make you want to run out and see this flick the first chance you get. And we’ve got even more great interviews coming your way featuring some of my favorite creators. Stay tuned for more info!

What else? Oh yeah… remember a little thing we did last year called the
Stumblebum Studios Anthology 2005? Well we’re at it again! That’s right, Round Two: Stumblebum 2006 is underway as we speak and promises to be bigger and better than the previous anthology by light years. We’re planning to debut Round Two at this year’s Wizard World Texas. This book will have more art, more comics and more pages from the whole Stumblebum Crew. Reserve your copy now as this is sure to be the hottest selling comic published by a company called Stumblebum all year! I guarantee it will break our website in half*!

All this and there’s a pretty little site redesign just around the corner. What more could you ask for? And quit asking for naked photos. It’s not gonna happen. At least not until Stumblebum hits the “desperate for attention” phase and you better hope that’s a loooong way off.

*Not guaranteed

Emily Edison

This week David Hopkins’ and Brock Rizys Emily Edison hits the stands! I’ve been anticipating this book for quite some time, ever since I saw the first preview images. Brock Rizy’s style just blew me away… I just couldn’t believe that I’d never heard of this guy before. Then I got the chance to meet writer David Hopkins and I was bowled over by how friendly the guy was. That meeting with David sealed the deal and I’ve been waiting anxiously for the debut of Emily Edison ever since. I picked up a copy of the book today and it is gorgeous… just one hell of a beautiful looking comic. I can hardly wait until I get a chance to sit down and read the book in its entirety. I’ll have a review for the book up soon and there’s a good chance you’ll be seeing an interview about Emily very soon.

Curiouser and Curiouser

Brian K. Vaughn has released a teaser image
for his upcoming Dr. Strange mini-series,
which is drawn by former Breach artist Marcos Martin:

Does That Name Sound Dirty or Am I Just Messed Up?

Here’s a link to several images from the upcoming animated series The Amazing Screw-On Head, which is based on Mike Mignola’s brilliantly insane comic of the same name.

I’m pretty impressed at how well they translated Mignola’s style to the screen. I’m looking forward to seeing the show and if it retains even half of the random silliness and over the top adventure of the comic then I’m sure it’ll be great.
