The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #81

WARNING! None of the news or rumors you see here in The Bum’s Rush should be considered FACT until it actually happens. It might never happen. How do you know I’m not just making all this crap up? I could, you know. You’ve been warned!

Not So Much News, Not So Funny Books

You know, maybe it’s me, but there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of interesting news or rumors coming down the pipe as far as the funny books go. I’ll admit that over the past few months my interest in comics, especially in the mainstream, has become significantly diminished. Perhaps this has led to my inability to find any news that is exciting or compelling enough, at least to me, to write about it in this column.

Granted, I have been extraordinarily busy working on several projects including Round Two, 24 Hour Comic Day, the redesigning of this very website while simultaneously preparing for a number of exciting new projects for next year. It could very well be that I am too busy making comics to get overly excited about reading them.

It could also be that things I desire in a good comic simply cannot be found where I once looked for them. Superhero comics, which have held sway over me since high school, are becoming painfully predictable and boring. Mega-events, which continually fail to deliver on significant any level, are chipping away at my once boundless enthusiasm towards the big-name companies. Hype is destroying my sense of anticipation and my faith in the creators that do the hyping.

I’m just not having as much fun reading comics as I used to. And what’s the point if it’s not fun? I suppose I’m trying to find a new path as a comic book fan. I guess this column is as good a place as any to explore that path.

And Yet…

And yet this is still a column for comic book and industry news, ain’t it? So enough whining and introspection about why the funny books don’t do it for me like they used ta. Here’s a couple of interesting stories I scrounged up from around this electromatronic global communi-ma-bob we call the Internet:
  • Last week in Newsarama’s weekly Marvel Puff Piece, a.k.a. New Joe Friday’s, Joey Q revealed that Underworld actor/writer, Kevin Grevioux will be writing one of the new titles set to spin-out of
    Civil War.
  • Viper Comics has announced that, after a yearlong search, they will be adding five new web-comics to their site. The five web-comics announced are Bob the Squirrel by Frank Page, Brinkerhoff by Gabe Strine, Ugly Hill by Paul Southworth, Small Wonder by Worth Gowell and Muffin Time by Bryan Chojnowski. They will join the publisher’s current web-comics
The Horrible Pirates and You’ll Have That over the next few months.
  • Over on Warren Ellis’ online forum, The Engine, the mighty Ellis started a thread asking fellow professional comic creators what projects they are planning for 2007. You can check out the thread here.
  • A couple items of note from that thread:
    -   Artist Scott Chantler revealed that he will be the regular artist for an ongoing Hawaiian Dick series from Image Comics.
    -   Dean Haspiel is already planning an unnamed sequel to his ACT-I-VATE web-comic, Immortal. He’s also working on an adaptation of an R.L. Stein Goosebumps story,
Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes for Scholastic Graphix upcoming graphic novel anthology called Scary Summer.

The Most Important Convention You Will Attend… EVER!

As I mentioned last week, The Stumblebum Crew will be out in full force at this weekend’s
Wizard World Texas convention. We just got our shipment of Round Two from the printer and they look sweet so make sure to stop by Booth #2150 in Artist Alley to pick one up. In attendance will be Dana Place, David DeGrand, Dave Sherrill, Kevin Steele, A.C. Hall and myself. Ours will be the table surrounded by hot girls and jealous fanboys, adorned with the best looking comics you’ve ever seen in your life and guarded by a cranky luchador with a lisp who demands to be called El Bastardo Atractivo.*

*Portions of the above statement may be categorically untrue and not at all likely to ever be true.

In Case You Didn’t Know…

52 and Civil War both suck. Why are you still reading them?

The “A.C. Hall Is A Liar!” Contest

Most of you probably noticed that a few of the stories that A.C. wrote about during his guest stint were, in fact, complete (and completely hilarious) fabrications. See, A.C. is one heck of a talented writer and sometimes writers are given to wild and fancy flights of artistic tomfoolery (commonly referred to as lying by normal folks). Hey, that’s why there’s a disclaimer. The thing is he wrote these stories so well that some of them are completely indistinguishable from the stories that were based on actual news and events.

So my question is, can you guess which ones are fake? Cause if you can then you’re probably going to want to enter the “A.C. Hall Is A Liar!” * Contest. The first person to correctly name all of the fake stories will win a complete set of Stumblebum Studios comics, including the upcoming Round Two! anthology, plus a few other goodies from the Stumblebum Store.

Okay, a few hints:

There are a total of six fake stories.
Two of the guest columns contain no fake stories at all.
The fake stories are complete fabrications so don’t look for stories that are mostly true but have an element of silliness or contain jokes about said story.

So to enter the contest, first go to the Bum’s Rush Archives and check out column’s 72 through 79. Then just send an email with the title “A.C. Hall Is A Liar!” to thesuperleezard@yahoo.com with your six choices and your physical address so I can send you your prize should you win. Good luck to you!

*For the record I don’t really think A.C. is liar. He’s just very good at telling stories that are not at all true.
