Down But Not Out Mailbag Special!

The ol’ DBNO inbox gets a large volume (three letters every two months) of mail, so I figured I’d do a little answerin’ for you, the ever-inquisitive public. This will also allow me to post an actual DBNO, which has become the most chronically late column to ever grace the internet. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Hey man, love the column! What happened? It used to be weekly!

Okay, Mark, here’s a little explanation for ya. I’m knee-deep in finals this week, which is why I’m doing the DBNO in this format (it allows for a quick write-up!). School is also the reason why the column has been… intermittent lately. End of the semester will do that to ya. But hey, it is the end of the semester (this is the last week actually), so expect the column to return to its weekly status next week!

From: David R.
Subject: Hey

What is your favorite comic book ever?

I’m going to assume you mean title and not single issue, so I’ll answer it like this: I don’t know. It’s hard for me to pick something like that, what with all the creative team changes and whatnot, which means for varying degrees of quality. I prefer to think of my favorites in terms of eras. The one exception to that is Paul Chadwick’s Concrete, since Paul has been on it from the start (he is the creator and all) and it has been absolutely solid.

So, with all that in mind, I’ll say that Stan Lee/Steve Ditko'sThe Amazing Spider-Man is one of my absolute favorites. The Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Fantastic Four also ranks really high. Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz on the first volume of Moon Knight, Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s Uncanny X-Men, Mark Waid’s
The Flash
, Peter David’s Spider-Man 2099, Scott Lobdell on and adjectiveless X-Men, David Michelinie on The Amazing Spider-Man. Honestly, this list could go on and on!

Okay I’ll give you Darkhawk and maybe even Deathlok, but Sleepwalker?? Come on he sucks!
