Sucker Punch Spotlight by Dana Place

I wish I could tell you who turned me onto Jamie Dee Galey’s livejournal comic because I would give them a big kiss then forgive them for trying to have me killed in my own house. IN MY OWN HOME, WHERE MY CHILDREN…

Oh wait, anyways, I have been a pretty quiet fan of his art and just get a giggle out of everything he draws, whether it be naked Jamie amusing himself, or Jamie globetrotting the world visiting his webcomic pals. Each strip is just so much fun to read.

Jamie was nice enough to take time out his day to answer a few questions for us here at Stumblebum Studios.

STUMBLEBUM STUDIOS: Tell us a little about yourself, where you are from, a little about your life there in California.

JAMIE DEE GALEY:  I was born in Palm Springs, CA, way before old people called it a mecca, back then it was miles and miles of dirt. My brother and I would leave at 8am and just wander about in the local mountains and return for a sandwich before heading out again. Now I live in Hollywood, CA which is really Los Angeles but I live in an area called Silver Lake. It is an awesome 'hood. I have 2 sons named Jacob (8) and Stephen (10) and I live with my girly who's name is Katie. She is awesome and is going to grad school downtown for fashion design. I work at a bakery and when I am not there, I sit at home and draw pictures and drink Guinness or whiskey.

SS: Where did the idea of the world traveling adventures of Jamie Dee Galey come from? Can we expect any more surprise appearances from your favorite TV characters?

JDG: The idea came from not knowing what to draw for my daily comic. I had noticed Tom McHenry's journal comics getting weird with him putting in Proust and stuff. A few years ago I was going to do a journal comic about a spy and have it be like, 'Jim's Journals' but never got around to it. So this is kind of where I ended up. I am going to do this for a bit longer but have another project lined up to start after I run out of people to visit.

SS: You never wear any pants. Funny, and strangely hypnotic, but where did that come from?

JDG:  I live in a warmer part of the world and being naked is being free. This isn't that strange of a thing. How fully dressed are you when you are home watching the big game on TV? Me? I don't watch sports but if I did I would be naked.

SS: Where do you get your daily inspiration from, and who would you say your biggest influences are?

JDG: Daily inspiration from? I have no clue. I just like to draw, I guess. Earlier on in life it was Frank Miller, Alex Toth, Sam Kieth, Erik Larsen and a few others. I then went though a dry spell and did not read comics but after coming back about 2.5 years ago I really got into the whole Kochalka, Jeff Brown, Top Shelf group. Now though I have discovered a whole slew of people like Eddie Campbell, Jason, Hineshi Hino and other artists from far away lands and time.

SS: Why do you keep drawing? What keeps you motivated to put together these strips?

JDG: Same as before. I just like to draw a lot. Even when I didn't draw comics about 3 years ago I still doodled and stuff. I had a spell of about 5 years of no comics or art because of an ex GF but I am lucky in the fact that Katie really pushes me. That and my kids think it is cool that I draw comics.

SS: What do you do to pay the bills?

JDG: There is a bakery in Silver Lake that I call home too for my day time stuff but I also do freelance crap whenever I can/need to.

SS: Liquor or beer, and what is your favorite of either?

JDG: Drinking and no pants. That's our wacky Jamie! These days it is liquor. Beer makes me way too fat.

SS: Last question. If you could have an interviewer ask you any question, what would it be and answer it.

JDG: When can you start?
As soon as you'll hire me.
Wait? About comics? Oh.
I love to talk about my family so maybe: How are your kids and Katie?
and I'd say: Dude, they are so damn cool. The other week, Jacob pantsed Stephen, but then Stephen caught his fart in a jar and poured it onto Jacob while he was sleeping. It was pretty rad. Katie was knitting too.
