The Weigh In by Dana Place

Outside my window beautiful women are laying out by the pool, the thermometer reads 105 degrees, and I have seen more than my share of “Blockbuster” movies over the last few weeks. Summer is halfway over and before you know it we all will be dressing in out favorite Star Wars costumes and borrowing a niece or nephew to take trick or treating. Well, maybe not all of us.

The other day while getting ready for work, I caught the announcements for the nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards, and my stomach announced it’s displeasure at the news. You see, even though the sky is bright blue, and all of my sweat shirts are in a box in the back of the closet, I just realized that the seasons, they are a changing. This is the beginning of award season.

From the Emmy nominations to the Oscar presentation, the next seven months will be used by Hollywood to showcase the best they have had to offer over the last twelve months. Anything that will get people into a theater to see an Oscar nominee or to check out that great new show that may be cancelled due to ratings, instead of xXx III or this weeks installment of the George Lopez show can only be better for the industry. My stomach problems are a result of the hype. The red carpet, the fashion shows, the overabundance of the whole thing.

I can’t stand the fascination with what the stars are wearing, who they are with, the whole celebrity thing. This fascination has taken over the entire season and pushed the initial reason for the awards off of the table. The chance for an industry to honors itself for spending millions of dollars to entertain people, and to honor the best work these people put together. If only they can get over themselves.

So, when you sit down with your friends to watch that next awards show, remember, that movies aren’t about the people walking down the red carpet, the pictures, the gossip, and the fashion, movies and television are about what they make us feel, and how they entertain us. That is pretty much all for this week for the Weigh In, and I’ll see you all next week.
