The Weigh In by Dana Place

The Emmy awards were last week and the winners have been announced. Now that Hollywood has announced their favorite television shows, here are the ones over the last year that seem to have been overlooked, and you should get into, if you aren’t in the know already.

(Sunday)
Grey’s Anatomy-(ABC, Sunday 9pm, CST)-The little medical drama that could. With a crappy timeslot and hidden behind ESPN football, this gem of a TV show is going to need all the help it can get.
Family Guy-(Fox, Sunday 8pm, CST)-This funny and daring comedy doesn’t pull any punches and was just as funny in it’s 3rd season as it’s first. Having been cancelled once, it’s too good to fall by the wayside again. Check it out. It is what the Simpsons should be, and maybe once was.

(Monday)
Arrested Development-(FOX, Monday 7pm, CST)-The most intelligent comedy on television. Laugh out loud funny, but it can’t seem to build up any steam. In danger of cancellation after every season because of low ratings. We should all be watching this one. If it gets cancelled, it will be looked at as the next “Sport Night”. A comedy too smart for television.

(Tuesday)
House-(FOX, Tuesday 8pm, CST)-A refreshing change to a lineup full of the same type of medical drama. If you haven’t seen it yet, definitely check it out. Hugh Laurie makes the show.

These are the some of the best shows on TV that may or may not see an untimely death, but are good enough to try and keep alive. If you check them out and like them, spread the word.

And with the new fall season upon us, I am going to keep an eye on the new shows coming out, and I’ll be sure to drop a recommendation if I like anything I see. And you know I wouldn’t steer you wrong

Early recommendation:
My Name is Earl
(Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, Jaime Pressly)
How can you not get a big giggle out of a guy who makes a major life decision after watching an episode of Carson Daly. He has a good heart but just happens to be completely hapless, and surrounded by the same. Incredibly hilarious stuff.

And now:
Coming to a multiplex near you: (9/30/2005)
Into the Blue: (Thriller)
(Paul Walker, Jessica Alba, Scott Caan, Josh Brolin)
Plot: Divers find a sunken treasure and tension mounts when they run into the criminals looking for the same sunken treasure.
Buzz: Jessica Alba in a bikini for an hour and a half. I can’t really get past that. And the buzz is that is what they are counting on. But, when is that a bad thing.

Serenity: (Science Fiction)
(Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin)
Plot: Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a space pilot on the losing end of a civil war, picks up a doctor and his sister, inadvertently putting him in the middle of warring factions trying to get her back.
Buzz: The internet community has been awaiting the release of this movie since Joss Whedon announced he was making it over a year ago. Since the cancellation of the series (Firefly) it was based on, the show has gotten a large internet following. This is definitely the movie with the hottest buzz this fall. If you are reading this website, then there is a good chance you will be in line for this movie this weekend.

The Greatest Game Ever Played: (Drama)
(Shia LeBeouf, Colin Firth, Elias Koteas)
Plot: The story of 20 year old Amateur Frances Ouimet, and his defeat of World Champion Harry Vardon in the 1913 US Open.
Buzz: The feel good Disney movie of the season. If you are into that kind of thing and can sit through two hours of golf. Have at it.

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: (Drama)
(Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson, Laura Dern)
Plot: Based on the true story of a woman in the 1950s that has to overcome difficult odds when her and her husband cannot make ends meet.
Buzz: Unfortunately, this is not that sequel to Boogie Nights we were all hoping for. This actually sounds like something along the lines of Norma Rae. So, enter at your own risk. On the other hand, if you are looking for a good movie without the t-n-a, this sounds like the kind of cast that can pull it of.

New on DVD (9/27/2005)
Robots Spongebob Squarepants (S3)
Lords of Dogtown Lords of Dogtown (SE)
Evil Dead 2 American Pie (3 pack)
Dr. 90210 (S1) Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power
