The Weigh In by Dana Place

Wizard World Texas/aka: Our first show as Stumblebum Studios

Setting the Stage:

This weekend was a huge relief. All of the worrying and fretting, preparing, folding, and stapling is done. All of the money has been spent, the three books we put together are laid out on the table, along with the flyers and whatever else we could come up with, and all we can do is sit back and talk to anyone willing to listen. Paul, Dave, and Kevin were doing sketches for anyone that asks and I became our de facto mouthpiece, trying to spread the enthusiasm that has sometimes even dipped in our little group. Putting your blood, sweat, time, and energy into something that you hope one day will bear positive results is kind of like jumping off a cliff, flapping your arms, and hoping gravity doesn’t kick in, all while sitting in a room full of people all jumping off the same cliff. Not to say it isn’t a good thing to jump off of a cliff every once in a while.

A learning experience:

Ever since we all decided to get together and work on this website, with no real business experience to speak of between us, everything has been one learning experience after another. This weekend has definitely been the biggest so far. Everything from what to print, to how to print them, to how to lay them out on the table (and everything in between) is pretty new to us and I think this little milestone has somewhat energized the group to bold new heights. This weekend helped make it pretty clear that we still have a lot to learn. But I think we are all enjoying figuring it out as we go. We are all looking forward to, and more dedicated to, putting together the best website we can, and we hope that you continue to follow along.

This week at your local multiplex: 11/11/05

Get Rich or Die Trying: Drama
(50 cent, Terrence Howard, Bill Duke)
Plot: While dreaming of being a rapper, 50 Cent’s mother dies and he is forced to sell crack to support his family. He uses his words to help keep him sane and to give him a way out.
Buzz: Many people have been clamoring over 50 Cent’s first attempt at acting, and 50 Cent does have a large following, all of them sure to be in theaters this weekend.

Zathura: Adventure/Family
(Tim Robbins, Dax Sheppard, Kristen Stewart, Jonah Bobo, Josh Hutcherson)
Plot: After finding a game in their basement, two brothers are hurled through space and have to race to finish the game in order to make their way home.
Buzz: This is being billed as Jumanji in space, was produced and written by the same writers, and from what I can tell of the trailers, that is probably about what you are going to get, minus the Robin Williams.

Derailed: Thriller
(Jennifer Aniston, Clive Owen, Vincent Cassell, Melissa George, RZA, Xzibit)
Plot: Two married people meet and begin an affair that goes tragically awry when they start getting blackmailed. They must learn how to turn the tables on their blackmailers to save their family.
Buzz: Jennifer Aniston’s first movie after her much publicized divorce. This is the only thriller coming out around this time, and its main competition seems to be mostly children’s movies. People looking for something a little different may help boost this movie’s overall box office.
