The Weigh In by Dana Place

The Weigh in 81

With the announcement of the Golden Globe nominees, award season is in full swing. These nominations are considered good indicators of some of the names and films that are expected to pop up around Oscar time. The Golden Globes is unique from the Oscars in the sense that it also acknowledges television shows in its ceremony, neglecting the technical awards. So, for your perusal and a chance to add these films to your Netflix queue, Tivo, or to check them out at your local Blockbuster before you start hearing more about them from your co-workers in February, here it is; the list of Golden Globe nominations for 2007:

Next week in my world:

Next week the best of 2006 special will round out the end of the year and then most of the crew will be rotating articles through the month of January. I’ll be back at the beginning of February at which time the Oscar nominations will have been announced and I’ll spend that month taking an in depth look at some of the biggest categories. Until then..

Enjoy our best of 2006 and January rotation. I’ll see you back here before you know it.

All the news that is fit to forget (real news, not so real commentary):

Although it always gives me a chuckle to joke about some of the “celebrity news” that comes out of Hollywood every week, there isn’t much going on this week, and coincidentally I will be abandoning my little post here for a while so I wanted to put together a quick list of stuff to keep an eye out for while I am gone.

The new Shield Season
24 Season
The second half of Lost
The first Transformers trailer
The Oceans 13 trailer (with Al Pacino???)
The second half of the Battlestar Gallactica season
The Superbowl (at least one cool movie trailer)
Pan’s Labyrinth
Smoking Aces
Idiocracy on DVD

This weekend at your local multiplex (12/20 and 12/22/2006)

(12/20)
Rocky Balboa: Drama
Sylvester Stallone, Milo Ventimiglia, Tony Burton, James Frances Kelly III, Antonio Tarver
Plot: The sixth film in the Rocky series, Rocky decides to get back into the ring to fight small regional fights and when a virtual match suggests he could beat the reigning champion, Mason “The Line” Dixon, he has to decide whether fighting again at that level is worth the possible damage to his health.
Buzz: Come on man. It is another Rocky movie. Who doesn’t love Rocky Balboa?

The Good Shepherd: Drama
Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, John Turturro, William Hurt, Alec Baldwin
Plot: The story of the yearly years of the CIA told through the eyes of one of its members.
Buzz: Directed by Robert DeNiro and the movie is picking up a lot of Oscar buzz. This may be one to check out.

(12/22)
Night at the Museum: Comedy
Ben Stiller Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Kim Raver, Robin Williams
Plot: Down on his luck and looking for a better life, Ben Stiller gets a job as a night watchman during the graveyard shift at a museum. When the artifacts start coming to life he has to figure out to stop them and save the museum.
Buzz: Ben Stiller as Ben Stiller in a comedy about museum artifacts. Slap a funny mustache and give him a bad accent and I am there. Sadly this movie has neither.

We Are Marshall: Drama
Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox, Ian McShane, Anthony Mackey, January Jones
Plot: The story of the death of most of the Marshall University football team and the efforts of some of the townsfolk to revive it.
Buzz: (see review)
