The Bum’s Rush #13
Aw yeah, Lucky 13 boys and girls! Hard to believe I’ve been
able to retain my attention span long enough to do 13 weeks
worth of articles. Still, I soldier on. Never give up, blah,
blah, blah.
This past weekend one of the biggest events in the comic
book industry took place, the
San Diego Comic-Con International. The Comic-Con is a
four-day pop-culture extravaganza that is held each and
every year and is always guaranteed to be a treasure chest
of cool and exciting news relating to upcoming comics,
movies and more. I’m sad to say that I was unable to attend
this year (next year for sure!) but I was glued to the comic
news sites anxiously awaiting all the news and
announcements. Herein I’ve compiled all the news that
interested me and will hopefully interest you.
Ultimate Quick Bits 2 – Revenge of the Quick Bits!
(A VILLIAN’S UNITED Tie-In)
- Todd Dezago and Craig Rousseau’s
The Perhapanauts will be published as a mini-series
from
Dark Horse. I am a HUGE fan of
Rousseau and I’ve been waiting for a while to see if
this series would get picked up.
- Darwyn Cooke, the man, the myth, will be writing and
illustrating an ongoing Spirit series for DC
based on comics legend
Will Eisner’s most famous character. Apparently the
book was in the works and given Eisner’s go-ahead not
long before he passed away. I’m really looking forward
to this one.
-
Just prior to the Spirit ongoing series there
will be a Spirit/Batman crossover written by Jeph
Loeb and illustrated by Cooke and J. Bone.
-
Another of
Robert E. Howard’s (Conan, Solomon Kane)
creations will be coming to the big screen. Peter Berg (Very
Bad Things, The Rundown) will direct Bran Mak
Morn, the story of the last king of the Picts
fighting against the rule of Rome in Britain.
-
Peter David (Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman,
Fallen Angel) will be writing a new X-Factor
comic for
Marvel,
which spins out of his fantastic
Madrox mini-series. The bad news is Pablo Raimondi,
the artist on Madrox, won’t be returning for this
book. The good news is artist extraordinaire
Ryan
Sook (Arkham Asylum, Seven Soldiers’
Zatanna) will be doing the art. Very nice.
-
Will Pfeifer (Catwoman, Finals) and Giuseppe
Camuncoli (Intimates) are working on Captain
Atom: Armageddon for
Wildstorm. Looking forward to this, mostly because
of the creators, though I suppose this means that
Camuncoli must definitely be off of Intimates.
Sigh.
-
Novelist
Charlie Huston (Six Bad Things, Caught Stealing,
Already Dead) and artist David Finch (New
Avengers) have been announced as the creative team
for Marvel’s long-awaited Moon Knight series.
- Mark Waid has signed an exclusive with
DC. Like Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns, Waid will
have a large role in the creative development of the
Post-Infinite Crisis DC Universe. He’ll also be
launching a new The Brave and The Bold series, a
book he describes as a “your travelogue of the new DC
Universe.”
- I was pleasantly surprised to read that Robert
Kirkman’s creator-owned
Image Comics character Invincible will meet
Spiderman in the Kirkman written Marvel Team Up
#14. I was even more pleased to find out that
original Invincible artist Cory Walker will
illustrate the issue.
-
Frank Cho will be drawing a few issues of New
Avengers. Not surprisingly the story he is to draw
will focus on Spider-Woman. Ah, boobies.
-
Paul Pope’s (THB, Heavy Liquid, 100%) new
project is finally here!
Batman: Year 100, a 200-page, four-part mini-series.
And man, does it look awesome. I can’t wait.
- Doug Mahnke (Batman, Seven Soldiers’
Frankenstein) is everywhere! Now he’s going to be
drawing a Team Zero (a prequel of sorts to
Wildstorm’s Team 7) comic written by action comic
guru
Chuck Dixon.
- Brian Singer was at the Comic-Con to talk about
Superman Returns and it sounds like it is in damn
good hands. There were even reports (and I’m not lying)
of people crying tears of joy after seeing some of the
footage that Singer brought with him. Ha ha, crazy
nerds.
- All-Star Superman will be debuting in
November!!!! (omg, tears of joy)
- Matt Wagner is finally getting to his Batman:
Dark Moon Rising series that was announced over a
year ago. The story will split into two connected
mini-series called Batman: The Monster Men and
Batman: The Mad Monk and will be a sort of sequel to
Batman: Year One. After that Wagner will be
working on new Grendel material!
- Word is that Marvel has announced something (or
will, I’m not really sure, it’s all so very confusing)
that will crack the Internet in half. The Internet will
then travel to Asia looking for some sort of homeopathic
cure while his unstable protégé will assume the mantle
of Internet and probably start killing people. Poor,
poor Internet.
- It seems (and I am only speculating based on things
I have heard and read) that the JLA comic might
be coming to an end. Maybe? I’m sure it won’t but you
never know. Maybe they’ll relaunch the book and
Wolverine can join the team? Yay, New JLA!
- I just started a brand-new webcomic called
Der Wundervolle Bean so go check it out. I wonder
why no one mentioned that at Comic-Con?
Not quite as much HUGE news as I was expecting. Certainly
not as much gossip-worthy material as years past. It seems
there was a lot more movie news going on. Comic-Con is
certainly becoming a huge mecca for multimedia promotion.
Anyway, I’m sure there’ll be much more big new coming in
about a month or so when
Wizard World Chicago 2005 hits.
See ya next week!
NEXT WEEK: Probably something about comics, right?
