The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #16

Okay, okay, I know. This week’s column was supposed to be me blubbering and crying about the cancellation of one of my favorite comics, Breach. And I was in the middle of writing it while keeping an eye on the news coming out of the Wizard World Chicago Convention when I realized that there was too much big news to ignore. So I’ll blubber and cry and bitch and moan about Breach next week, that’s a promise. Right now though there’s way too much stuff coming out of the Con for just any old Quick Bits feature, so I present to you …

Ultimate Quick Bits 3 – Wizard World Chicago Con Edition

  1. Grant Morrison and Jim Lee’s relaunch of Wildcats has been confirmed. This will be one hell of a book.
  2. Grant Morrison will also be taking on a role at Wildstorm similar to the one he has at DC. He will be in somewhat of a creative/editorial position in regards to all of the major series relaunches for Wildstorm.
  3. Jeph Loeb has just signed an exclusive contract with Marvel where he’ll be working on something with …
  4. Joe Madureira! Joe Mad has been out of comics for several years, working instead in the gaming industry. No word yet on what Loeb and Madureira will be working on, but I’m sure it will be a while before we see it.
  5. Loeb’s exclusivity with Marvel (which goes into effect at the beginning of September) begs the question – what will happen to the ongoing Supergirl series the Loeb was slated to write for artist Ian Churchill. Loeb assured that he would not leave a mess behind him, so I assume that he will write the first several issues before another writer takes over the series.
  6. Not surprisingly Ed Brubaker and Mike Lark have been confirmed as the new creative team for Daredevil following the departure of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev next year. I may have been one of the few people who was not at all impressed with the Bendis/Maleev run on Daredevil and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Brubaker and Lark (who previously worked together on DC’s Gotham Central) will do.
  7. Bendis will be working on a Spider-Woman origin mini-series with the Luna Bros. (Ultra and Girls from Image Comics), which will lead into a Spider-Woman ongoing by Bendis and his Daredevil collaborator Alex Maleev.
  8. Saw cover art for Marvel’s X-Factor (written by Peter David with art by Ryan Sook) and I’m thinking this might end up being a new favorite for me. (Click on top image to enlarge in a new window)
  9. Likewise the cover art for Nextwave has me looking forward to the Warren Ellis/Stuart Immonen book quite a bit. Still an awful name though. (Click on lower image to enlarge in a new window)
  10. Michael Turner will be doing a number of covers for Marvel as well as six-issues worth of interiors for the company somewhere around 2007.
  11. Leinil Yu, who has been working at DC for the past several years, has just signed an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics. One of the first projects the artist will tackle is an Ultimate Hulk vs. Ultimate Wolverine book with a writer still to be announced.
  12. DC announced a brand new Sandman Mystery Theatre mini-series from Vertigo in 2006. The five issue series, titled Sleep Of Reason, will be written by John Ney Reiber with art by Eric Nguyen and will feature a new character donning Wesley Dodds’ gas mask to face terrors in the Middle East (which, dammit, is really similar to a Sandman series I wanted to pitch. But hey, what the hell right? I’ve yet to get any comic work published at all.)
  13. DC is hoping to price their new weekly series 52 (no word on whether that title is permanent or not) relatively low, with Dan DiDio suggesting that a $0.99 price tag would be a good idea. 52 is a series spinning out of the upcoming Infinite Crisis mini-series that will fill in the year long gap between Infinite Crisis and the “One Year Later” story that will cross over all the DC titles.
  14. The Ultimates will have a Vol. III following the wrap up of Vol. II by writer Mark Millar and artist Bryan Hitch, but with a new creative team. Some rumors floating around the convention speculated that Jeph Loeb and Joe Madureira might be that new creative team. Makes sense, Bryan Hitch is a slow artist so why not replace him with an even slower one?
  15. Gail Simone and Talent Caldwell will be the creative team behind the launch of a brand-new Gen 13 series.
  16. Ale Garza’s new book is called Skye Runner, which will be part of a new fantasy line at Wildstorm called “Storm & Sorcery”. The book will take place in the same world as Garza’s previous mini-series Ninja Boy.
  17. Considering Giuseppe Camuncoli is working on the new Captain Atom: Armageddon series it’s not a real surprise to hear that his last book The Intimates, with writer Joe Casey, will be ending with issue #12. Fortunately Ale Garza will be handling art chores as the book ends, so while it certainly sucks to see yet another favorite book get the axe at least it’ll look really pretty going out.
  18. Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco should return to Arrowsmith late next year.
  19. Look like Warren Ellis and John Cassaday’s Planetary may be wrapping up early next year. Of course I’ll believe that when I see it.
  20. Ha-ha, Peter Milligan and Mike Allred will return to X-Statix with a Dead Girl mini-series. That was kind of unexpected but great news.
  21. This wasn’t announced at Chicago but I heard that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are hoping to team up for a sequel to Daredevil. Glee!
  22. When Kevin Smith showed up at the Marvel Knights panel to announce he had finished writing Spiderman/Black Cat (mentioned in last week’s Quick Bits) he received some applause from the audience. Respectfully, Smith declined the applause and acknowledged that he didn’t deserve any congratulations and shouldn’t be celebrated after he “lowered the bar.” Okay, he got some points for that one. At least he admitted that he screwed up.
  23. After a slate of one-shots Danger Girl will return in November with a four issue series titled Back In Black which series co-creator Andy Hartnell, joined by Nick Bradshaw on art, will write. The series’ other co-creator J. Scott Campbell will provide covers.

NEXT WEEK: Back to our regularly scheduled programming where I plan to blubber and cry about Breach (and maybe even The Intimates) being cancelled.
