The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #57

WARNING! None of the news or rumors you see here in The Bum’s Rush should be considered FACT until it actually happens. It might never happen. How do you know I’m not just making all this crap up? I could, you know. You’ve been warned!

A Brand New Rush

It’s time for a change. A makeover if you will. At 57, The Bum’s Rush ain’t no spring chicken. You see I’ve grown a little tired of the format I’ve been using for the past year or so. It bores me. From now on there will be less long-winded articles and more quick shots of information, basically taking the Quick Bits section of the article and expanding it so there’s more news and more of my jabs and bad jokes about said news. This will be closer to what I intended The Bum’s Rush to be in the first place – a rapid fire of news, info, and whatever other thoughts I have about the comic books. Or “funny books” as the kids say. Damn kids. Anyway, let’s see how this new format works shall we?

Talk To The Bum

Damn, I’ve already screwed up… this isn’t rapid-fire news or info… it’s a freakin’ interview. I give up.

In last month’s Talk To The Bum I interviewed most of the guys that make up the ultra-mega-entertainment conglomerate known as Stumblebum Studios. Most, but not all. I could say that they’re the redheaded stepchildren of Stumblebum and thus too busy cleaning out the basement and cooking me dinner and being beaten with a rod to be interviewed. But that’s simply not true. As far as I know, neither of these two are redheads.

Neal Langham is the latest addition to the Stumblebum Crew, writing and drawing the most brilliant webcomic on the net, Touched By A Bum, which chronicles his absolutely true adventures trying to get to Stumblebum Studios HQ, a trip which, I am sure, he regrets to this day.

Kevin Steele is not only the best artist I know, he’s also the best artist in the universe and has a golden certificate from God to prove it. Since day one he has been the talent behind Kevin’s Sketch Of The Week. He is also my art slave, cranking out page after page of beautifully detailed art while wearing a golden bikini and me constantly tugging on the chain around his neck and yelling things like "Pi char wanchi ix paa tani de chonki tiroy," and "Jor maja ix asha pi cho."

And now, the rest of the story:

Paul Milligan: What comics are currently at the top of your must read list?

Neal Langham: I've always been a really big fan of Todd Ramsell's comics. "Rocketship Go", " Cornhole Joe the Feverish Drunken Hillbilly", pretty much anything from his Lolygag website.

Kevin Steele: 100 Bullets.

Paul: Do you read any comics that you think more people should be buying?

Neal: If you can find a version in English, definitely pick up "Cowboy Henk: The King of Dental Floss". It's a funny, funny from Belgium.

Kevin: 100 Bullets, Sharknife.

Paul: Looking at the current trends in comics, which ones are you excited about and which ones turn your stomach?

Neal: The webcomic is exciting. I think that it is great for comics and for many many unpublished artists including myself (sort of). As for turning my stomach, I hate that there are people that are unwilling to open their minds to work that isn't published by Marvel or DC. They can't fathom anything other than steroid freaks in their underoos.

Kevin: I'm starting to get a little tired of the whole superheroes with normal lives thing, or regular people who have superpowers.

Paul: What made you a fan of comics and what keeps you reading them today?

Neal:  I suppose my uncle drawing Batman & Robin for me got me in, but sadly I'm not that avid of a reader these days.

Kevin:I love iconic characters, and great stories, but I don't really read them anymore.

Paul: You can pick any creative team you want for any book you choose. Who would you pick and what book would you put them on?

Neal:  I want the Stumblebum Studios guys to draw a Submariner comic.

Kevin: Kirkman and J.R. Jr. doing anything cool.

Paul: What is your favorite thing to do outside of comics?

Neal:  Spend time with the family and have a few drinks.

Kevin: Read regular books and try to find adventure in my own life.

Paul: Thanks for taking the time, guys. Now fetch my supper or it’s the rod fer the both o’ youse!

Bring On The WorldStorm

When the Captain Atom: Armageddon series (which sees the DC character transplanted to the WildStorm Universe with disastrous consequences) ends with issue 9 the entire fabric of WildStorm will be changed setting the stage for a new fall event called WorldStorm.

Oh, yay! Another damn event! Still, this will be leading into a massive relaunch of just about every WildStorm property with some of the biggest names in comics taking the reigns. Most of the books have been announced and most of them I’m awaiting with bated breath, especially Wildcats by Grant Morrison and Jim Lee and Midnighter by Garth Ennis and Chris Sprouse. The latest addition to the line is Stormwatch, written by Christos N. Gage and illustrated by Doug Mahnke.

Jim Lee also announced that he will be drawing three pages in the final issue of Captain Atom: Armageddon, which is due in stores on June 14th.

The Only Comics That Matter

This week, Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 3 by Bryan O’Malley

Next week, Punisher: The Tyger by Garth Ennis and John Severin
