The Bum’s Rush #7
This weeks Bum’s Rush was supposed to be about my favorite
comics, the ones at the top of my must read pile every month
and the comics I am most looking forward to in the future.
Then all this freaking news from the Wizard World Philly
convention sprung up! So I’m moving the intended topic back
a week for something I like to call . . .
Ultimate Quick Bits!
- During the 7 issue Infinite Crisis mini series all
the DC comics will be jumping forward, taking place a
year after the conclusion of Infinite Crisis. I’m trying
not to be worried about this. Could be cool. I trust DC
right now; they’ve done well so far. I hope they keep it
up.
- One reason to breathe a sigh of relief over the
Infinite Crisis? No continuity altering. Phew!
- Both Kubert brothers (Adam and Andy) have been
Marvel mainstays for years, something like 15 or more
years. Now they’ve jumped ship and signed 3-year
exclusives with DC! Boom! Take that Marvel!
- Speaking of the Kubert family, Joe Kubert will be
doing a six issue Sgt. Rock mini series. I still haven’t
read the Between Hell & A Hard Place Graphic Novel
Kubert did with Azzarello but I have been meaning to and
I’m looking forward to this new series.
- Can someone explain to me what the hell “616” means
when it is used to refer to the “mainstream” Marvel
Universe? I wish someone would just freakin’ tell me.
- So New Excalibur is a return to the roots of the
comic. Captain Britain? Yay! Pete Wisdom? Yay! Michael
Ryan on art? Yay! Chris Claremont writing? Nay.
- Iron Man? Late. Ultimate Iron Man? Late.
Spiderman/Black Cat? Soooo late. Daredevil: Target? Also
soooo late. Daredevil: Father? Laaaaate. Come on Marvel
. . . get your shit together . . . jeez.
- Brian K. Vaughn is going to be “co-writing” with
Bryan Singer on his highly anticipated Ultimate X-Men
arc. Translation? Brian K. Vaughn is going to be writing
Ultimate X-Men from a plot by Bryan Singer.
- All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder . . . wow.
Could we stick a few more words in there? How about (as
a friend of mine offered up) All Star Batman and Robin,
the Boy Wonder in Gotham? Come on . . . why not go all
the way with it?
- While I’m really looking forward to the new Top Ten
mini series by Paul DiFilippo and Jerry Ordway, I cannot
imagine it will be anywhere near as amazing as the
original series.
- The new Vertigo based Deadman series by Bruce Jones
sounds great!
- A new Wildcats mini series!! Mixed feelings here. I
loved the Joe Casey version; in fact it was one of my
favorite comics. And Robbie Morrison hasn’t exactly, no
offense meant to him, blown me away with anything he’s
written. Still, Talent Caldwell is drawing it. That’s a
big plus.
- More Kev!! This is one of my favorite characters in
the Wildstorm Universe. Garth Ennis writing The
Authority is hilarious. So more Kev (in The Magnificent
Kevin) is definitely a good thing.
- The second volume of Dan Slott’s She Hulk cannot
come fast enough.
- Same goes for the Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain
fueled Ghost Rider comic.
- Hmmm, haven’t made a slam against Marvel for a
little bit here. Let’s see . . .
- Marvel wets the bed. It’s true . . . I heard the
guys on the playground talking about it. Ewww. Marvel,
you’re sooo groddy.
- Normally I don’t buy big deluxe hardcover
versions of comics. But the Crisis on Infinite Earths:
The Absolute Edition sounds too good to pass up.
- Patrick Gleason will be drawing the Green
Lantern Corps mini. Sweet! Patrick Gleason is one of
those guys who deserves a big book.
- Gail Simone. Rob Liefeld. Teen Titans. C’mon DC,
what are you doing? You’re not Marvel you know.
- The bad news – Carlos D’Anda won’t be drawing the
new Vigilante series.
- The good news – Bruce Jones is writing it, Ben
Oliver is now drawing it and Michael Golden is doing
covers!
- Both Hyperion and Nighthawk (Supreme Power) are both
getting spin off mini series. Hope they’re better than
the boring-as-hell Doctor Spectrum mini.
- Pssst. Marvel has cooties!
- Jorge Lucas is going to be drawing a (David Hine
written) Colossus mini. Why, oh why do they keep giving
him work? Seriously . . . he sucks.
- The third Summers brother will be revealed in X-Men:
The End v2 #5! WHAT? People still wanna know about that?
I feel like I’m insane. Plus, how is it that X-Men: The
End just keeps on going and going and going?
- Quesada said, “Fans will be hugely surprised and
hugely depressed” due to the coming changes spinning out
of House of M. Sweet. I really want to be “hugely
depressed” by my comics. Joe Quesada is such a jerk, he
thinks he is so cool but he is not. I hate him forever
and ever. (Sorry Dave)
- No All-Star Ambush Bug? Awwww . . .
- Marvel used PowerPoint for their X-Men presentation?
Now I know I hate them.
NEXT WEEK: For really this time, it’s my favorite
comics of the moment and what I’m looking forward to in the
near future (I swear!)
