The Bum’s Rush #92 And this week in the ol’ Stumblebum January switcheroo, I’m taking over Paul Milligan’s always-entertaining and informative, The Bum’s Rush. I’ll see if I can’t live up to the greatness (is my nose brown or what?) that’s become associated with Paul’s column. (New) (New) New Avengers… Over
at Newsarama.com last week, Brian Bendis announced the new
line-up for New Avengers. Honestly, as soon as
he announced Doctor Strange as a member, I was hooked. As
the week went on, and the feature revealed more characters,
I became a little less certain I’d be picking up the book. Here’s the roster (in the order they were announced): Echo, Ronin, Doctor Strange, Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Spider-Man. I think Doctor Strange, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist make the book interesting. Echo and Ronin have potential, especially considering that we don’t know who is going to be in Ronin’s costume, but the inclusion of Wolverine and Spider-Man (Marvel’s most popular characters, of course) makes it hugely redundant. Not that I have any problem with either character (as a matter of fact, I love ‘em both), but do they really need to be in yet another book? We see ‘em all over the place as it is. The Axe Effect Coming as no surprise to anyone, Firestorm: The Nuclear Man and Manhunter, two of DC’s best comics are ending in April; Firestorm with issue #35 and Manhunter with #30. Why does this come as no surprise? Because both are good, out-of-the-box books, that haven’t caught hold with audiences. That doesn’t mean the books don’t have an audience. Manhunter’s fans have tried their hardest to keep the book afloat, much like the fans of Marvel’s Spider-Girl series, but unlike the fans of Spider-Girl, it looks like Manhunter’s fans just don’t have the numbers and the book isn’t going to continue. The mainstream comic book world continues to remain stagnant because fanboys don’t allow themselves to try something new. Congratulations! Passing On… Rumors of Charlton Comics’ Joe Gill’s death have been circulating for a few weeks now. Legendary television and comics writer Mark Evanier, the best source of all information regarding past masters of the comic book and television fields, confirmed last Tuesday that the rumors were, in fact, true. Joe Gill, co-created, along with Steve Ditko, the very popular Captain Atom. Gill had a long and busy career with Charlton Comics and will hopefully, with the help of comic book fans and historians, be remembered for his work for years to come.
