The Bum's Rush by Paul Milligan

The Bum’s Rush #94

WARNING! None of the news or rumors you see here in The Bum’s Rush should be considered FACT until it actually happens. It might never happen. How do you know I’m not just making all this crap up? I could, you know. You’ve been warned!

Look Who’s Back And You Know He’s Able

Well, the January Rotation – 2007 Edition is over and done with. Everyone’s back where they belong and the world just feels right somehow. I’m writing about comics. My column is extremely late. And girls still ignore me as if I was wearing a sign that said “Don’t Bother”. Yep, back to normal.

Except! Things ain’t quite as normal as they might appear. For one thing the huge, internet-shattering mega-event that is THE BUM’S RUSH #100 is just around the corner! Can you believe I’ve done almost 100 of these columns? Barring, of course, fill-in’s and what not… but who counts those? I love comics more than your average bear and I still can’t believe that I’ve somehow found almost 2 years worth of comic’s related stuff to talk about. Anyway, I’m going to make sure that this is the big deal it should be… an event to be celebrated, remembered and talked about for generations. Or I might just slap together something at the last minute. WHO KNOWS!? That’s why you read this column - the element of surprise.

Another not so normal thing happening is that, leading up to the world breaking BUM’S RUSH #100, this column will be a little bit more concise than normal. I know, I know – sometimes I tend to be really long-winded with this little article. Okay, most times. Okay, all the time! Sheesh, get off my back. But I promise, the next six columns will most likely be abbreviated versions of the normal Bum’s Rush. Why, you ask? Well, for one thing, we’re gearing up for a brand spanking new look here at ol’ Stumblebum Ranch and there’s lots of work to be done without me droning on page after page, adding tons of links and pretty pictures. And b – I’m the man of a thousand projects and right now there’s about a thousand and one on my plate.

Let’s see, there’s Small Press Idol, which begins this month and which both A.C. and I are submitting a project. More details to come. I’ve got dozens of design projects in various stages of being almost ready to procrastinate on. Convention season is coming. And I’m about to begin work on Stumblebum’s entry into this year’s Free Comic Book Day, which promises to be the coolest Stumblebum book to date!

What? You thought I just sat around and read comics all day?

For Dave, Who Did Almost Die

This Saturday, starting at 8 P.M., Stumblebum and the Excelsior Comic Gallery are hosting a live art show, auction and concert to benefit Stumblebum’s own Dave Sherrill. See, not too long ago Dave came down with a serious bout of bacterial meningitis and was hospitalized for quite a bit of time. He’s since made a full recovery but his medical bills are pretty staggering. Hence, Stumblebum’s Live Art Show, Auction and Concert for Internet Cartoonists Named Dave Sherrill Who Almost Died That One Time!

There will be tons of donated art from all over the country, loads of local artists drawing pretty pictures while you watch, Dave’s band 100 Damned Guns putting on a live show and most importantly… Free Food!!!

You’re probably wondering why I’m only now mentioning this show, which is sure to be THE event of the season. Well, I’ll tell you why. This show was originally supposed to be a surprise for Dave and so we were doing as much promotion for the show as possible without letting him in on what was happening. But we just found out that he knows about it now. Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.

So if you’re wondering what to do this Saturday then why not show up at:

Return of Quick Bits!

Since I’m trying to keep this column short I’ve decided to bring back a feature I used to use back when I first started this column – Quick Bits! It’s more like a news brief, hitting the major headlines and such, without any long winded “opinions” by some tool (a.k.a. Me).
  1. Last week Joss Whedon announced that he would no longer be writing or directing a Wonder Woman feature film for Warner Bros. Look for some really crappy director like McG or Brett Ratner to take his spot real soon.
  2. Just after Whedon’s announcement, David Goyer chimed in with his own news – he’s no longer involved with The Flash movie, also for Warner Bros. Apparently Goyer and the studio couldn’t agree on a direction for the film – The Crow: City of Angels bad or Blade Trinity bad.
  3. Not long after Goyer broke the sad news it was announced that director Shawn Levy would be replacing Goyer on The Flash. Wait a sec… Shawn Levy? The guy that directed Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther and Night at the Museum? Wow, so I guess this means they’re going for Blade: The Series bad.
  4. Geoff Johns revealed that both he and Tony Daniel would be leaving Teen Titans with issue #46. Taking over the writing chores on the book will be Robin scribe Adam Beechen, who has been reviled on the internet (ain’t it a lovely place) for turning Batgirl into a villain.
  5. In other news, I will continue to not read Teen Titans.
  6. Independent publisher Dynamite Entertainment has picked up Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s creator-owned series, The Boys, which was cancelled last week by DC Comics despite seemingly healthy sales. Most fans assume that the series was simply too extreme for DC and therefore the reason behind the cancellation. Personally I’m not a fan of the series, nor anything else Garth Ennis has written in the last few years (with the exception of occasional issues of The Punisher) but I would like to congratulate both Ennis and Robertson for being able to continue their series with very few problems. It’s no Preacher, but the kids seem to like it.

In Case You Didn’t Know…

I rule. Hard.
