The Weigh In by Dana Place

Ahh.. the beginning of September. Baseball playoffs are a month away, the football preseason is halfway over, and I just finished my fantasy football. It is one hundred degrees outside and according to the meteorologist, seems to be letting up a little from here on out. I don’t think I’ll break out my sweat shirts just yet.

I have spent the last week putting together a few ideas on how to retool this great machine of entertainment called “the weigh in”. An article that is just as informative as it is entertaining that you want to come to and find out the latest in pop culture and film. In short, a more structured article. This week I have my first installment of what will become a permanent fixture at the end of every article. Quick snippets of movies that are due to be released at the end of each week and a little about the buzz surrounding it.

This week in movie buzz

The Woods: (Horror)
(Patricia Clarkson, Agnes Bruckner, Bruce Campbell)
A young girl is dropped off in an out of the way boarding school and after people start disappearing and after having horrific visions, she realizes that there is something very unfriendly in the woods.
Buzz: no real buzz here, seems just like your typical run of the mill horror film. Except for the cameo by Bruce Campbell, and well he’s Bruce Campbell. If you are looking for a good scare this weekend check it out if you can, it is going to be in pretty limited release. Otherwise, it is probably worth eventually checking out on video. Directed by Lucky McKee, the writer of May, a film I highly recommend you check out at your local video store.

The Sound of Thunder: (Sci-Fi/Action)
(Ed Burns, Ben Kingsley, Catherine McCormack)
Based on a Ray Bradbury short story, it is set in the future where time travel is possible. A corporation uses the technology to send rich people back to the past to hunt dangerous but extinct animals. When the rules that are set up to protect the future are broken, the present they come back to has been completely changed.
Buzz: Confused, well that may be the reason that this film has high caliber stars but is completely flying under the radar. This could be a nice sci fi gem. Or not, the original trailer was shown at the San Diego Comic-con in 2004 but hasn’t been released until now, with no fanfare. Usually not a good sign.

The Transporter 2: (Action)
(Jason Statham, Amber Valletta, Keith David, Matthew Modine, Hunter Clary, Hunter Chase)
The transporter has retired to Miami where he is a driver for a wealthy family. After bonding with the twin sons, they are kidnapped, and he has to use his special skills to bring them back.
Buzz: It’s a sequel to the original Transporter. If you liked the first then check this one out. Judging by the trailers, the action scenes and half naked women seem to be ratcheted up a notch. Other than that, I am only going to say two words, “Matthew Modine”. I don’t know what that means, seeing his name in the credits kind of threw me for a loop. Take it for what it’s worth.

New on Dvd:
Sahara Tommy Boy (SE)
Monster in Law  Clueless (SE)
Blues Brother (SE) Roseanne (S1)
Transporter (SE) Nip/Tuck (S2)
Ong Bak House (S1)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (S4) Married w/Children (S4)
Lilo and Stitch 2 The Morning After
Almost Heroes
