The Weigh In by Dana Place

In this week’s version of the “Weigh In”, we have a sort of milestone. This is my 25th article. Six months of articles about everything from movies and entertainment, to sugar coated adventures about my escapades with the NPAA. Hopefully, with many more entertaining and informative articles to come. In honor of this semi-special occasion I wanted to take a moment to gloat, or rather put it in a little perspective. And in this business we call “show” the best way to measure your success is to look at the failure of others.

Memorable Television shows (with a shorter life than this article):
Clerks (animated): 6 episodes
Police Squad: 6 episodes
Stephen King - Kingdom Hospital: 13 episodes (stronger than the power of the king of horror)
The Michael Richards Show: 8 episodes (more powerful than one Seinfeld regular, no match for the whole team.)
Baby Bob: 13 episodes (it was a talking toddler, but better is better)
Freakylinks: 13 episodes
Ferris Bueller: 13 episodes (better than Jennifer Aniston with the original nose, not as good as the new nose)
The Prisoner: 17 episodes
Mr. Bean: 19 episodes (longer than Rowan Atkinson, but certainly not as funny)
Kolchak, the Night Stalker: 20 episodes (but he had 2 movies, so we’ll call this one a wash)
The Flash: 23 episodes
Boomtown: 24 episodes

For a little perspective, here are some historical events I ignored in order to work full time on getting you your entertainment fix.

Historical Events since the first article 4/5/05:
Prince Rainier of Monaco Dies
Pope John Paul II funeral
New Pope Elected
Michael Jackson Verdict
European Constitution fails ratification
Deep Throat uncovered
7.0 California Quake
Oil Hits $60 a gallon
Final Star Wars Movie released
Sandra Day O’Connor retires
London subway bombing
Gaza Strip Evacuation
Cindy Sheehan camp outside Crawford, TX
Katrina Hits
Rita Hits
Peter Jennings Dies
Bob Denver Dies

It has been a pretty crazy six months for this fledgling little article, and I just wanted to take a second to those who have been here with me for the beginning. This is just the beginning, and hopefully just a stepping stone to a bigger and better future.

This week at a multiplex near you (10/14/2005)

Stay: Thriller
Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Ryan Gosling, Bob Hoskins, Janeane Garofalo
Plot: A suicidal young man announces his plans to end his life to his psychologist in three days. In an attempt to convince him to live, she takes him on a journey through life and death.
Buzz: Trailers have been playing for this movie for a while, and are about as vague as the plot description. Director, Marc Forster is more known for his character pieces like Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland, so this may be more of the same, and less of a weird trip movie.

Elizabethtown: (Romantic Comedy)
(Kirsten Dunst, Orlando Bloom, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Biel, Judy Greer)
Plot: A local patriarch’s death and memorial brings together an entire family together, with comedic results.
Buzz: Cameron Crowe’s first film since 2001s Vanilla Sky. Cameron Crowe has a pretty loyal following after films such as Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. You can’t help but expect him to keep up his track record of good films.

Domino: (Action/Thriller)
(Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke, Mena Suvari, Delroy Lindo, Lucy Liu, Christopher Walken)
Plot: The kinda sort of possibly true story of Domino Harvey, bounty hunter.
Buzz: Tony Scott’s newest action thriller. Judging by the trailers and all of the buzz this movie is going to be full of hot Keira Knightley, plenty of explosions, and an over the top Christopher Walken. I have been so looking forward to this movie. Tony Scott+Keira Knightley+action and explosions+crazy Christopher Walken= 8 dollars out of my wallet.

The Fog: (Horror)
(Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair, and Rade Sherbedgia)
Plot: An old legend of the death of a crew of sailors one hundred years ago comes back to haunt the town in the form of a fog.
Buzz: A remake of the 1980 John Carpenter film of the same name, this is the only horror film this week, and if you are looking for a pretty good scare, this is your only option. But it will probably get lost in the shuffle with such big name movies hitting theaters this week.

This week in DVD:
Unleashed (unrated and rated) Undead
Kingdom of Heaven Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
High Tension The Jeffersons (season 4)
Kicking and Screaming Me and you and Everyone We Know
South Park (season 6) Soap (season 4)
Arrested Development (season 2) The complete Fresh Prince of Bellaire
Veronica Mars (season 1)
