A regular guy’s look at the state of the movie
industry (part two of three…)
The movie industry over the last year has been in
somewhat of a decline and for the last six months anyone who
pays attention to any of the movie websites have been
hearing the back and forth between fans and the movie
studios complaining about everything from the quality of
films over the past few years to the cost of making movies
to DVD sales cutting into movie sales to on demand video and
the advent of rental by mail. Last week we looked at the fan
argument that the quality of films are deteriorating, this
week we will take a look at the argument that DVD sales,
movie costs, video on demand, and rental by mail is
affecting the Hollywood bottom line. Since last week we used
the last five years as our template for comparison, this
week I am going to do the same.
Movie costs:
Here is a list of the top ten movies cost over the last five
years, compared to gross sales
(courtesy of
www.imdb.com):
| Cost |
Gross receipts |
Net income |
| 2005: 737m (6 over 100m) |
2.10b |
1.363b |
| 2004: 1.057b (1 over 200m, 4 over
100m) |
2.76b |
1.70b |
| 2003: 989m (5 over 100m) |
2.36b |
1.37b |
| 2002: 838m (4 over 100m) |
2.54b |
1.70b |
| 2001: 999m (4 over 100m) |
2.34b |
1.36b |
The numbers all appear pretty stable and if anything it
seems the studios actually spent less money on the
top ten movies than any of the last five years.
While this does not take into account big budget movies that
did not make any money, and surely did take a nice chunk out
of the movie studios bottom line, I did not include them
here because, in the view of the movie studios, people are
not seeing these films because DVD sales are eating into
their theater profits. With the exception of this year, it
seems that movie studios have been making more money in
theater sales, so is it possible that more people are
waiting to see some of these big budget movies on DVD? Let’s
take a look and see how many movies not in the top ten were
the biggest sellers of the last few years. Since most Summer
movies were just released on DVD or have yet to be released,
lets look at the last years 2001-2004 and see if we can find
a trend.
Biggest theatrical DVD sales over the last four years
(thanks to
www.leesmovieinfo.net):
| 2004
DVD sales |
|
| Shrek 2 |
Spider Man 2 |
| Return of the King |
Matrix Revolutions |
| Star Wars: The Clone Wars |
Elf |
| The Passion of the Christ |
Brother Bear |
| Harry Potter and the Prisoner of
Azkaban |
Day After Tomorrow |
| (all in the top 10 theatrical releases) |
|
| |
|
| 2003
DVD sales |
|
| Finding Nemo |
My Big Fat Greek Wedding |
| Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers |
Signs |
| Pirates of the Carribean |
Bruce Almighty |
| Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets |
Seabiscuit |
| Matrix Reloaded |

theatrical releases) |
|
| |
|
| 2002
DVD sales |
|
| Lord of the Rings |

| Monsters Inc |

The Mummy Returns |
| How the Grinch Stole Christmas |
Jurassic Park III |
| Planet of the Apes |
Hannibal |
| Castaway |
Rush Hour 2 |
| (all in the top 10 theatrical releases) |
|
Looking at these numbers it appears that the top theatrical
DVD sales for the last four years have almost exclusively
been the top ten movies of that or the previous year, and
unless this trend completely reverses, this year’s movies
that do not make a splash at the box office won’t make up
for their lack of performance with DVD sales and do not seem
to be the reason people are missing these movies in the
theaters.
Another argument is that home rental is keeping people out
of theaters.

It appears that films that did not make it into the top ten
money list of any year do seem to get their day in the sun
at least on the rental shelf. Unfortunately, with so any
different rental options it is not possible to nail down
exactly how much money was spent to rent these movies,
although rental being cheaper and more convenient may help
explain why people are willing to wait 6-12 months to see
these movies, and according to the DVD sales data above, not
willing to pay more than a few dollars in rental fees for
them. What does all of this mean? I’ll take a look at what I
think is happening in the finale to this article next week
and whether or not I think there really is a problem. Since
Hollywood studios seem to believe that they are losing
money, we’ll take a look at some of the ideas coming out of
Hollywood to reverse what they seem to think is a definite
trend.
This weekend at the multiplex (Wednesday 11/23/05 and
Friday 11/25/2005)
11/23/2005
Rent: Musical
Rosario Dawson, Taye Diggs, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Jesse
L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Tracie
Thoms
Plot: The film version of the Tony award winning stage play
about Bohemians in New York’s East Village, how they deal
with love, life, and AIDS.
Buzz: A musical about a stage play about Bohemians? The
critics are eating it up but nobody else really seems to
care.
The Ice Harvest: Comedy/Thriller
John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton, Oliver Platt, Randy Quaid,
Connie Nielsen
Plot: Charlie Arglist (John Cusack), an attorney for the
mafia, steals 2.4 million dollars and tries to get out of
Wichita, Kansas before the Christmas holidays, only to be
stymied by an ice storm. He spends the evening trying to
hide his bounty from a wacky group of friends and relatives
and just get out of town.
Buzz: The trailers and early buzz is that this is gonna be
one incredibly funny movie.
Just look at that cast.
Just Friends: Romantic Comedy
Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris
Plot: Ryan Reynolds stars as a high school geek turned big
time record executive who gets trapped in his home town
during a storm and runs into his high school sweetheart,
where he learns about true love.
Buzz: Ryan Reynolds has always been pretty funny but most
people are wondering how many times can he do the same
damn thing?
Yours, Mine and Ours: Comedy/Romance
Dennis Quaid, Renee Russo
Plot: This remake of the 1968 Lucille Ball classic is about
two single parents with a considerable amount of kids. When
they decide to elope, their respective children decide to
foil their plans.
Buzz: No real buzz at all. A Hollywood remake for a good
movie only because they can.
In The Mix: Drama/Comedy
Usher, Chaz Plaminteri, Emmanuelle Chiriqui,
Plot: The hottest New York d.j. saves the life of a mafia
don’s daughter and becomes her bodyguard.
Buzz: Usher gets a movie and now his fans have a chance to
see him act. Maybe this movie will make a ton of money so we
can see more of his comedic talent. (Yeah Yeah)
