The Weigh In by David DeGrand

Hello wonderful readers!! David DeGrand here taking a break from drawing “Brain Goop” to write about what new DVD’s and movies are coming out for you to glue your eyeballs to this week. With the holiday season over, the outlook is going to look grim for a while at the box office as this is the time of year studios begin to dump the crap that they didn’t know what to do with the rest of the year (the same thing happens after summer). For instance, this weekend we will be treated to:

Glory Road
I really just don’t care for sports movies, and this one looks to contain every single sports movie cliché in the book. I’m sure it will do really well in the small towns, but if you’re reading this web site then you are probably a comic fan and hate sports, so I really don’t need to tell you to stay away from this one

Hoodwinked
This is the first in what looks like to be the eight hundred million bajillion CG animated talking animal movies that 2006 has to offer us, and man it looks terrible. The graphics look like a cinematic from a Nintendo (Video Games/Nintendo 64) 64 game, and the story just looks like they’re trying to capture what made the Shrek films so popular. Unless you are a mentally challenged three year old, I really don’t see how any entertainment can come from this “movie”.

Last Holiday
Queen Latifah stars in this comedy about a woman who finds out she has something like three weeks to live and decides to blow all of her money and just have fun with the time she has left. Huh, I wonder if she will fall in love, realize that there is more to life than material things, and learn to love life for the simpler pleasures. Stupid formulaic crap.

Tristan and Isolde
I guess I’m a literary retard, but I never have heard of this story before in my life. James Franco and some hot chick play a Romeo and Juliet-ish couple during the medieval period (I think, my history sucks). I’ve seen so many really bad epics like this in the recent past (Troy, Alexander, King Arthur…) that I have no interest whatsoever in seeing this film. Looks like one the chicks will be dragging the guys to.

After running down that list of crap, you might be better off checking out some of the DVD’s coming out on Tuesday, which include:

Dead Poet’s Society (Special Edition)
I haven’t seen this film in a long time, but it’s one of the few movies that I ever cried while watching. This will be a good opportunity to check it out again, and probably cry again (damn I’m a wuss).

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Bueller…Bueller…Edition)
This movie just simply rules, and if you don’t know that then you need to get this DVD the second it becomes available. The eighties provided us with more great comedies than I think any other decade, and this one is a classic.

The Flash: The Complete Series
I barely remember this live action adaptation of the comic book, but from what I do remember it kicked ass. Should be interesting to see if it holds up after fifteen years.

The Wild Bunch Two-Disc Special Edition
This movie is simply brutal, but damn if it isn’t effective. This very controversial film from the very controversial Sam Peckinpah has an incredible cast and is easily one of the best westerns ever made.

The rest of the DVD releases are simply too horrific to mention, so they are best left ignored. I hope this helps in planning your week in entertainment, we all have to make the best of it this time of year.
