The Weigh In by Dana Place

The Weigh in 77

This week in my world…

Another baby step in the life that is Stumblebum Studios happened with the debut of our most ambitious project to date, “Round Two”, our second anthology. The anthology is a 68-page collection of art, comics, and prose from all of the guys that call the studio home. It is an amazing piece of work and I suggest you all pick up a copy in our comics shop.

Excuse me a minute while I gush a little about the crew:

As the editor and occasional grumpy old buzz kill of this little web magazine, I rarely get the chance to say anything nice about everyone that contributes to the site. I am working with some of the most talented people I have ever met. I couldn’t even imagine what Stumblebum Studios would be without everyone’s collective efforts. Sometimes it takes something like the show here in Arlington to remind a guy just how lucky he is. I am proud to be able to pull up this little website and think about all of the progress we have made over the last year and a half. It is a strange feeling to think that there are people out there that recognize and appreciate our collective works. I hope all of the gang members that made it out were able to pull the same feeling I did. We never take the time to collectively pat each other on the back. Well pat away guys, we all done good and should be proud of ourselves for this little niche we have managed to carve out for ourselves. Wizard World Texas was one of those experiences that convinced me that it is only going to get better from here for all of us.

The faint afterglow of a successful convention appearance:

With the anthology out of the way and the last convention of the year in our rear view mirror, it is kind of nice to just sit back and write a few articles, do a few movie reviews and take a breathe before jumping into all of the festivities that the end of the year and the beginning of 2007 brings for the crew. So all of you out there keep coming back in the next few weeks and months to check out all of the fun and excitement that we have in store for you.

Next week on The Weigh In:
I think better when my hands are fiddling with something, It has been a weird little tick I’ve had for as long as I remember. And while trying to figure out how to end this week’s little peek into my head I found myself shuffling a deck of cards sitting on my table. Since I’d like to think that people of all ages read this column, I can’t go into detail as to the theme of the cards in my hands, but suffice it to say they are probably best left to daddy and his drinking buddies’ poker game. Anyways, inspiration has come from a deck of playing cards and next week we will look at the most beautiful women in film. If you have any opinions on the matter, shoot me an email at DPlace76@yahoo.com.

All the news that is fit to forget (real news, not so real commentary):

Last weekend, after what seems like decades of rumor bordering on Hollywood urban legend, Fox broadcast the first trailer to the soon to be released Simpson’s movie. Hopefully, the release of the movie will allow the actual creators of the series to get back to work producing a quality show. No word on what the producers plan on doing with the 25 monkeys that have been writing the show for the last few years but maybe Fox can find an edgy sitcom for them to work on.

Rumor has it that Ben Affleck has been looking to put together a remake of the classic Clint Eastwood thriller, Play Misty For Me. This news comes after a host of remakes have all failed to live up to their namesakes. Undeterred, Affleck commented that if anyone can fully express on film just how bat shit crazy chicks can be, it was him.

Lena Headley has been cast as Sarah Conner in a Fox television series that supposedly picks up after Terminator 2. While casting has begun, writers have not been hired and a pilot has yet to be written. Executives are allegedly waiting for the writing team of a hit Fox cartoon to become available this summer.

Borat was number one at the box office for the second week in a row. Creator Sacha Baron Cohen is such a hot commodity that studios are scrambling to pick up other characters from his hit tv show. Cohen is expected to release a film based on the experience of selling his characters, and studios are already clamoring for a chance to bid on it.

This weekend at your local multiplex (11/17/2006)

Casino Royale: Action
Daniel Craig, Judy Dench, Eva Green, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini, Mads Mikkelsen
Plot: In James Bond’s first official “007” mission, he is led to an international banker for terrorists and is forced to beat him in game of high stakes poker. During the game he has to fend off lethal attacks and the watchful eye of a government official assigned to protect his bankroll.
Buzz: The 21st Bond film and with a new Bond, the producers decided to go in a different direction with the films. Grittier, dirtier, and back to the beginning. I don’t know about hard core Bond fans, but I am really looking forward to this flick.

Happy Feet: Animation
(voices) Nicole Kidman, Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Brittany Murphy
Plot: In the land of Emperor Penguins each penguin has a specific heartsong that attracts its soul mate. When one penguin is born without the ability to sing, he has to find other talents to woo the penguin he is meant to be with.
Buzz: I don’t know, this little kids story seems to have found a way into my heart. But with the slew of crappy computer animated films, I’ll probably wait till I hear from the internets before making any kind of judgment on this one.

Let’s Go To Prison: Comedy
Dax Sheppard, Will Arnett, Chi McBride
Plot: A felon learns that the judge that put him away dies and his son is put in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. He decides to take his frustration out on the judge’s son.
Buzz: While I was never a big fan of Mr. Show, the trailers look pretty fun. There are a lot of comedies out there, all with pedigrees, so this movie could have a hard time getting any legs.
