The Weigh In by Dana Place

The Weigh in 79

This week in my world:

Brittany Spears was the most searched item on the internet last week. Coincidentally and not at all connected; Subway restaurants all across the country reported that they will no longer be selling their roast beef sandwiches until further notice.

Tori Spelling has announced a deal to publish her memoirs which is due out in early 2008. The book will come with a read along cassette and will be translated into 9 languages, including English.

Gwyneth Paltrow announced today that she is proud to be an American. So did a few other people, but who gives a shit about them, they actually live here.

News of two film remakes have come down the pipe this week. A remake of the classic film Short Circuit and a shot for shot remake of a film some of you may have heard of, Poltergeist. Instead of going to see these films, send me your $8 and I will urinate on the original films and mail them back to you. At least this way you get a keepsake.

Next week: Anyone completely stoked about the new Rocky flick. Next week we are going to look at the social implications and take a deeper look at each of the five films, plus what I think would be a cool way to end the series. This certainly has to be the last one right?

This weekend at your local multiplex (12/8/2006)

Blood Diamond: Drama
Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, Jennifer Connelly, Arnold Vosloo, Michael Sheen
Plot: A South African mercenary runs into a Sierra Leone mine worker in search of a valuable pink diamond. The mercenary runs into an American journalist and needs all of them to help find the diamond.
Buzz: The trailers are kind of a toss up in this one. DiCaprio can do wonders in a film like this and there is a good possibility we could be hearing about this film come Oscar time.

Apocalypto: Drama/Action
Rudy Youngblood, Dalia Hernandez, Jonathan Brewer, Morris Birdyellowhead
Plot: The story of the end of the Mayan civilization and a man being chased by an entire army trying to get back to his family.
Buzz: This movie is getting incredible reviews. Its only fault seems to be an incredible amount of violence and its director. A lot of Hollywood has found one of its own that they think is morally questionable and this may severely hamper this movie’s chances for an Academy Award.

Unaccompanied Minors: Comedy/Family
Dyllan Christopher, Tyler James Williams, Gina Mantegna, Quinn Shephard, Wilmer Walderrama, Lewis Black
Plot: Two kids stuck at an airport during a blizzard and learn about the “unaccompanied minors” room. The kids band together to bring fun to the airport and try to give the stranded passengers a good Christmas.
Buzz: (please see my review later this weekend)

The Holiday: Romantic Comedy
Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Eli Wallach, Rufus Sewell, Edward Burns
Plot: Two women in who are both jilted by lovers learn of each other online and decide to switch houses for the winter. They both meet love in the most unexpected of places.
Buzz: The only romantic comedy around and a definite break form the heady Oscar films and holiday comedies flooding the market.
