The Weigh In by Dana Place

#99

This week in my world:

Over the last two years I have been given the unique opportunity to put together a weekly article about a passion of mine. Next week will be my last article for the site. I will save the discussion of good times past and the talk of moving on until then. This week we will keep it light and talk about movies and where my article comes from.

I love movies. I guess that really comes as no surprise to anyone that has read this article for any length of time. I’d like to consider myself a film buff. I find enjoyment from some of the shlockiest horror films ever made to some of the most notable films in history. Walking into a movie theater and sitting in the seat, waiting for the lights to come down the screen shrinks down, sharing the same experience with the a group of strangers. Even sitting in the comfort of my own home and flipping through the channels, accidentally running across the title credits to a film I haven’t seen in years makes me happy. I eat up news about the latest blockbuster to be announced or my favorite director’s newest project. I suppose it is really no accident that I have spent the last two years talking about (and occasionally rambling about) something I enjoy. Movies give us a chance to disappear for a little while, they allow us to relax and forget about the things around us. Movies are a great chance to forget about things, laugh a little, and there are millions of them, all out my fingertips.

Years ago I used to manage a video store and had thousands of films at my disposal. I used to enjoy talking to people about their favorite films and suggesting movies that I think people would enjoy, especially when those same people would come in and talk about their opinion of the film and asked for more suggestions. This article has become an extension of that feeling I suppose. I still get the same feeling watching a really enjoyable film as I did sitting on the floor in front of my television watching Obi-Wan Kenobi sacrificing himself to Darth Vader. Goosebumps, maybe a chill, and occasionally I will let out a little smile because I am a fan of movies.

Sorry so short this week, but I am off to see the Wizard and my ruby red shoes only work during certain times of the day.

Next week: So Long and thanks for all the fish

Thank you for continuing to read this little article and what’s next for your humble host.

This weekend at your local multiplex (5/25/2007)

Pirates of The Caribbean-At World’s End

Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Stellan Skarsgard, Chow Yun Fat
Plot: The third film in the Pirates franchise, Will Turner and friends have to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow from the depths of Davy Jones locker. On the surface, the East India Trading company is taking over Will’s home and he needs to put together help from around the world to accomplish both goals.
Buzz: This is the movie that everyone says will be THE blockbuster of the year. It really doesn’t matter what I think of the movie or its previous incarnations. Man I hope this one doesn’t suck as bad as the 2nd one. But who knows, with the film being just short of three hours you could be looking at a very enjoyable ride or a real beating.
