The Second Mouse
by Archer Mayor
Archer Mayor has written another great story in the Joe
Gunther series called Second Mouse. This mystery is slow at
first but picks up after a few chapters. This author does a
wonderful job in telling this story. He keeps the reader
enthralled with the plot throughout this novel giving us
just enough clues to keep us interested.
This story starts off with the death of Michelle Fisher. Joe
Gunther stops by the crime scene, even though it's not his
case but once it's deemed a murder then it's his. Plus the
detective on duty would not say no to help from such a great
cop. The story goes back and forth between the murder
investigation and the life of Nancy, Mel, and Ellis.
According to Mel, they are the Three Musketeers of small
crime.
The murder investigation takes the reader through the
interviews of the neighbors and people who might have a
grudge against her. But, through the investigation we get
fingers pointed in other directions to the likes of Mel and
Ellis. While connections are made with Mel & Ellis the back
and forth of the stories become more frequent with more and
more connections.
This story makes the reader think about who killed Michelle
Fisher or if it was a suicide. It also makes us think about
why Mel does what he does. But the reader doesn't find out
what really happens to Michelle Fisher until the very end.
The story has mostly the history and present exploits of the
Three Musketeers, which keep getting more dangerous. I would
definitely say pick this mystery up when you get the chance.
It's a great read with good description and wonderful
developed characters.
