American
Virgin #1
Writer: Steven T. Seagle
Artist: Becky Cloonan
Colorist: Brian Miller
Cover: Frank Quitely
Plot: Born into a Christian family and being groomed
as the heir apparent to his father’s television evangelical
services, Adam spends his time preaching the virtues of
abstinence until marriage. While he is doing this he is
waiting for his bride to be to come home. He has to fight
the pressures of his brother’s drug use, his cousin’s
pressure to have sex and his sister’s less than virtuous
lifestyle. On top of all of this, the day before his fiancée
comes home from Africa he finds out she is beheaded. What
will Adam do?
Review: After reading the first issue of this four
part series my first reaction is; I don’t really know what I
think. So far, this really seems like one of those pamphlets
that I used to get in vacation bible school about smoking
and going to hell. If you are into those kind of things,
have at it. But of course it could take an entirely
different direction. I really couldn’t say unfortunately.
For all I know Adam could become a gay prostitute as penance
for losing his fiancée. Which in retrospect sounds just like
the ending to one of those pamphlets if I remember
correctly. I think that this is best left on the shelf until
at least the 2nd issue comes out. Just so we know what we
are getting into.
