Astro City: Samaritan Special
Writer: Kurt Busiek
Artist: Brent E. Anderson
Cover: Alex Ross
Lettering and Design: John Roshell of Comicraft
Color Art: Alex Sinclair
Plot: The Samaritan shows up to dinner with Infidel
as they catch up on old times.
As a first time reader of
Astro City, this issue is a pretty intriguing way
to catch up a reader on what seems like a really interesting
villain, Infidel. Told almost completely from the
perspective of the villain of the story, Kurt Busiek uses a
relaxing tone and does not try to wow us with action and
adventure, choosing instead to put together an almost
Arabian Nights type of story mixed with the chess match of
two men who both know subtlety is the best way to win in the
end. This issue is unique enough to help it stand out and
makes what could be a boring origin story a well-paced look
at what happens when the unstoppable force meets the
immovable object. This issue is worth picking up for the
eloquent storytelling but I would be remiss if I didn’t
mention the beautiful artwork of Brent Anderson.
Special thanks go out to Jeremy Shorr, owner of
Titan Comics for allowing us to use his advance
preview books for review purposes.
