Batman:
Gotham County Line #1 (of 3)
Writer: Steve Niles
Artist: Scott Hampton
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Colorist: Jose Villarrubia
Plot: After a battle with The Joker where The Joker raises
questions about what happens during the afterlife, Bruce
Wayne is left trying to make sense of his life. He doesn’t
have the time to ponder the question too long when he is
asked by ex-Commissioner Gordon to help a friend in the
Sheriff’s office on a serial murder case they are having
trouble cracking.
Review: Any Batman comic that starts with a knock down drag
out with The Joker gets an A in my book. But the book just
gets better after that. This 3 issue series is more of a
detective story, which I actually enjoy, and Scott Hampton
actually does something that was the final selling point for
me. As the mystery gets fuzzier, so does the art. The
clearer you think the answer is the sharper and darker the
lines get, and with every little twist, the art devolves
into lightly inked sketches. Run out and get this. This is
the first of the series so, jump on in and if the rest of
the series is as good as this one, we are all in for a big
treat.
