Captain
America #8
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Pencils: Steve Epting
Inks: Mike Perkins
Colorist: Frank D’Armata
Plot:
“The Winter Soldier” begins here kicking off the second arc
in Brubaker’s run. After the stunning revelation of just who
has been behind the turmoil in Cap’s life recently, the
Winter Soldier’s boss General Lukin kicks his plan into high
gear, launching his first all-out assault.
Comments:
Let me start by saying, Cap is my favorite superhero. I’ve
always been very opinionated about how Cap should be written
and have for the most part, been disappointed by so many
talented writers-- especially the left-wingers that turn him
softer than George W’s environmental policies. As far as I’m
concerned, Cap is a soldier-- make that SUPER-soldier-- and
he ain’t designed for hugs and powder-puff foreign policy.
This latest issue has the feel of getting Cap back to being
an ass-kicking, name-taking, Right-Winged, Red-Right-Hand of
Uncle Sam. He’s gotta deal with a world-destructive villian
who’s already chalked up a body count that includes the Red
Skull, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and one of Cap’s former
sidekicks. Oh, and it looks like the original sidekick,
Bucky, might be back with a bloody vengeance and even
bloodier agenda.
Steve Epting’s pencils, Mike Perkins’ inks and Frank
D’Armata’s colors do a great job on creating a noir-ish feel
for the book that perfectly compliments Ed Brubaker’s dark,
moody writing. I’m definitely recommending this one for
lovers of a Captain America that’s as tough as needs to be
in a world where it’s not always a great idea to be the
living symbol of a country on the global hot-seat.
