Captain Universe/Hulk #1

The
Uni-Power is a mysterious cosmic force that, in times of
crisis, bonds with people to grant them the incredible
powers of a being known as Captain Universe. In this first
issue of a series of five one-shots the Uni-Power is
determined to locate the source of a malfunction within
itself that almost left a previous host dead. Before the Uni-Power
can bond with a new host to investigate the malfunction it
must first replicate the powers of several heroes throughout
the Marvel Universe, starting with The Incredible Hulk.
When I first read about the return of Captain Universe I had
to wonder why? Why bring back such a seemingly insignificant
character? But after reading this first issue (one of five
one-shots that will lead in to a new Captain Universe
series) I think I’m beginning to understand. It’s part of
the late 80’s/early 90’s nostalgia that is cropping up
amongst some of the younger writers who were fans during
that era of comics. Just as Robert Kirkman has done in
Marvel Team-Up with characters like Sleepwalker and Darkhawk
and Brian K. Vaughn has done in Runaways with characters
like Cloak and Dagger, Faerber is doing in this new series
with Captain Universe. This is obviously a character he has
a great deal of fondness for and so he has brought the
character out of mothballs for a new audience.
I have to admit this was a pretty interesting book that
offers enough exciting situations and cool mysteries that
make me curious to see where the whole thing is going. What
at first seemed like a corny marketing scheme now looks like
it might actually have something fun and entertaining to
offer.
