Doll and Creature #2 (of 4)

Writer: Rick Remender
Penciller: John Heebink
Inker: Mike Manley
Colorist: Nick Filardi

In a twisted future world where religion has been outlawed a new drug has flooded the streets, turning addicts into horrible monsters, called “Hydes”. Only one person, a patchwork creature, called Gristle stands against the drug-addicted fiends. In this issue, Gristle must fight against a pack of “Hydes” and protect Doll, the woman who has become entangled in Gristle’s deadly mission. Plus, the origin of Gristle and his brother!

Rick Remender is a busy man. He’s got at least three ongoing books, Fear Agent, Sea of Red and Strange Girl, coming out from Image right now, each one completely unique but at the same time completely distinguishable as Remender creations. The same is true of this full-color re-release of his black and white Doll and Creature graphic novel from a few years ago. After reading the first issue of Fear Agent I really got into Remender’s retro-influenced storytelling. Doll and Creature is a perfect example of this style and further cements Remender as a writer I simply can’t pass up.

Doll and Creature is an eerie and unsettling twist on the old Beauty and the Beast story, full of hip, muscle bound monsters, cool cars and hot chicks all mixed together in a creepy and atmospheric dystopian future. This warped world is brought to life by gorgeous artwork that’s so perfect for this story it hurts. John Heebnick has a real classic and dynamic style made even more appealing by the sharp, heavy inks of Mike Manley.

I’d recommend this book to just about anyone, if you’re a fan of Fear Agent and other Remender books or if you’ve never even read one of his comics. Heck, you might want to give this book a shot even if you read Doll and Creature the first time, just to see the great new coloring that’s been added.

Special thanks go out to Jeremy Shorr, owner of Titan Comics for allowing us to use his advance preview books for review purposes.
