Last Planet Standing #1 (of 5)
Script, Plot, and Pencils: Tom DeFalco and Pat Olliffe
Finished Art: Scott Koblish
Colors: Avalon’s Rob Ro
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Plot:
The Fantastic Five are on a mission checking out a galactic
anomaly when they notice that a line of once inhabitable
planets are having the life sucked out of them. As they are
tracking the destruction and trying to find its cause, a
nearby sun explodes and they are apparently vaporized.
Meanwhile, on Earth, some of the new Avengers are struggling
with what to do with their lives when they are assembled to
stop the destroyer of planets, Galactus.
Buzz: It is pretty obvious that this comic was designed for
preteens, from a not so subtle “Stay in School” message that
seems to pop up every other page to the equally transparent
plug for Universal theme parks. This issue seems too
important for all of that though. The influx of fresh blood
into the Avengers creates a sense of unpreparedness for
pretty much anything large-scale that comes along. This
could be a really interesting and possibly important five
issue series if it didn’t seem if like such a throwaway
issue. Maybe everyone involved in the putting this together
realized that all of the destruction and anxiety would
eventually amount to nothing, and you can see it in the
first issue. You would think they would wait a few issues
before letting us in on that.
Special thanks go out to Jeremy Shorr, owner of
Titan Comics for allowing us to use his advance
preview books for review purposes.
