Each issue of DC Comics’ Solo series features a
different stand out artist doing whatever they want for
about 48 pages, sometimes completely on their own, sometimes
with a few talented writers. Issue seven of the series
features Mike Allred, creator of the hit indie series
Madman, teaming up with colorist Laura Allred, his wife, and
writer Lee Allred, his brother.
This issue of Solo is a bit of a departure from
previous issues. Most of the artists who have been featured
in Solo
previously have chosen to tell stories in a multitude of
genres with maybe one or two stories starring DC characters.
As Bizarro tells us, in his own twisted way, on the books
intro page, this is Mike Allred’s love letter to DC Comics
and it certainly shows. The book is full of Allred’s
signature pop craziness and sugary sweet retro images
starring some of his favorite DC icons.
Most of the stories within are the usual zany, hilarious and
over the top adventures that one expects from Allred. But
there are also poignant stories such as “Batman A-Go-Go!”
which touches on the idea of comics (and art in general) as
escapism and fun-filled fantasy versus the more realistic,
and certainly darker, approach.
Man, if you really love comics, in all their brightly
colored, over the top, and imaginative glory, then do
yourself a favor and pick up this issue of Solo. I
guarantee there’s something in this book to entertain
everyone.
Special thanks go out to Jeremy Shorr, owner of
Titan Comics for allowing us to use his advance
preview books for review purposes.
