The
Trials of Shazam #1 (of 12)
Writer: Judd Winnick
Art and cover: Howard Porter
Letterer: Rob Leigh
Plot: Shazam is back in a world completely different
than the one he left. Billy Batson is accidentally rounded
up and sent to be sacrificed to an ancient god. After
fighting off his captors and the demon they are trying to
resurrect, he accidentally brings to life a being that is
remarkably similar to him.
Review: This first issue is way too short. Chock full
of action and one liners that just keep the book flipping
through my hands I couldn’t help but flip back through the
book after reading it and hoping there was more to read that
I had actually missed. While Shazam isn’t exactly the
darkest comic on the market, I really liked Howard Porter’s
use of heavy shadows and vague art mixed with painstaking
detail in other panels to accentuate what important points
in the book. If this book is any indication of the series to
come, this could be one of those books I wish were in my box
every week.
