Wildcats:
Nemesis #1 (of 6)
Writer: Robbie Morrison
Artists: Talent Caldwell &
Horacio Dominguez
Inker (for Talent Caldwell): Matt “Batt” Banning
Colorist: Carrie Strachan
In the first Wildcats series since the conclusion of Joe
Casey’s critically acclaimed Wildcats 3.0 a mysterious woman
known as Nemesis attacks a special convoy and takes a young
girl the convoy was carrying. Before she can escape however
a group of former Wildcats (Mr. Majestic, Zealot, Savant and
The Grifter) show up to confront Nemesis. During their
battle the book jumps thousands of years back in time to
reveal the origin of the deadly Nemesis.
Disappointed. That’s the first thing that came to mind after
reading the first issue of Wildcats: Nemesis. Fans of Joe
Casey’s ground breaking run on the previous series, like me,
are most likely in for a similar feeling. If you were a fan
of the original Wildcats series in the mid-nineties you may
be a little more interested in this book than most. The book
delves back into the past, digging up the ancient history of
the Khera/Daemon War but does little in the way of offering
any new or fresh take on that history. I was also
disappointed to see that Talent Caldwell, who I thought was
supposed to be the only artist on the series, actually only
drew half the book. The second half of the book is drawn by
Horacio Dominguez and presents a somewhat jarring shift in
style.
This books seems like nothing more than an attempt by
Wildstorm to keep the characters fresh in the readers minds
while they prepare for the actual relaunch of the series by
Grant Morrison and Jim Lee sometime in 2006. I think I’ll
most likely skip this mediocre mini series in favor of
waiting patiently for the real thing.
