X-Men/Power Pack #1 (of 4)
Writer: Marc Sumerak
Artist: GuriHiru
Letters: Dave Sharpe
In
the first issue of this mini-series Marvel’s prepubescent
superhero team, the Power Pack, attend a Halloween costume
party with their parents. Jack, also known as Mass Master
(which is one letter away from being a really unfortunate
nickname) is dead set on winning the grand prize for his
Wolverine costume. Unfortunately he’s not the only one who
thought a Wolverine costume was a good idea. Dozens of other
children have shown up in a variety of costumes worn by
Marvel’s favorite mutant hero. Jack goes off to sulk and
when his younger sister Katie (a.k.a. Energizer) tries to
comfort him he lashes out at her, sending her running into
the woods. In an unfortunate coincidence, the real Wolverine
happens to be on the trail of Sabretooth in those same
woods.
As far as kids books go this is actually a pretty good read.
It’s definitely better than some of the “all ages” comics
available for kids these days, including most of the Marvel
Adventures line of comics. It’s a great self-contained story
featuring young sibling superheroes that actually act like
kids (and like siblings). The art’s not bad either. I’m
actually kind of at a loss as to why this particular book
isn’t a part of the Marvel Adventures line, which is aimed
at younger audiences.
If my nephew was a little bit older this is exactly the kind
of book I’d want to put in his hands. Good, wholesome fun
that doesn’t come off as just a dumbed down version of a
regular superhero comic.
Special thanks go out to Jeremy Shorr, owner of
Titan Comics for allowing us to use his advance
preview books for review purposes.
