This
issue of X-Men Unlimited focuses on fan-favorite,
Wolverine in two separate stories about pain and suffering.
In the first story, “The Healing”, Wolverine lies near death
in the remote Canadian territory, Nunavut, explaining just
how painful his healing process can be. The second story,
“Pain is Necessary, Suffering is Optional”, Wolverine
confronts his old teammate Puck, who has become quite bitter
over the years and is taking out his frustrations on a bar
full of people.
I entered into this particular issue of Unlimited
with high hopes, mainly due to the great artwork by C.P.
Smith and John Lucas. And while the art certainly didn’t let
me down, the stories certainly did. Both tales read like
after school specials, being overly dramatic, silly, boring
and way too wordy. And seriously, do we need more
stories featuring Wolverine, possibly the most overused
character in comics? He’s in every X-Men book, a member of
the New Avengers, not to mention the star of his own regular
series. Enough already!
So there you go, two really corny stories, with terrific
artwork, about an overexposed superhero. Meh, I’m bored just
writing the review.
Special thanks go out to Jeremy Shorr, owner of
Titan Comics for allowing us to use his advance
preview books for review purposes.
