Part One: The Interview
“To be honest Mr. .., I’m sorry, I didn’t even catch your
name.” Mayor Harper said.
“Louise sir, Jerry Lee Louise. It says right there at the
top of my resume.” Jerry Lee said, leaning over the desk to
point at the top of his resume.
The mayor stared at him for a moment, taking in the site of
the strange man sitting before him. Jerry Lee Louise smiled,
his curly blonde hair falling down in his face. He wore a
bright blue suit. The mayor looked at the resume.
“Yes, it does doesn’t it?” The mayor looked back at Jerry
Lee. “Well, goodness gracious…”
“Great balls of fire. I get that one quite a lot sir.” Jerry
Lee said, cutting off the mayor.
The mayor grunted as he turned his attention back to the
resume.
“I’d imagine. As I was saying Mr. Louise…”
“Please, call me Jerry Lee.”
Mayor Harper sighed heavily before continuing.
“Jerry Lee, I’m not even sure why my secretary set up this
meeting. We’re not hiring anyone here at City Hall and
haven’t been for quite some time. As I’m sure you noticed,
this is a small town. Most of the people who work here have
been here all their lives.” The Mayor said.
“With all due respect Mayor Harper, you haven’t even looked
at my job experience.” Jerry Lee said.
Mayor Harper picked up his reading glasses from the desk
while letting out a long, dramatic sigh. He sat back in his
large leather chair and looked over the resume. Jerry Lee
watched silently, finally seeing what he had been waiting
for. Mayor Harper’s eyes widened and his body tensed up. He
lowered the resume and looked at Jerry Lee.
“Is this some sort of a joke son?” Mayor Harper asked.
Jerry Lee smiled as he answered.
“No sir.”
The mayor looked from the resume to Jerry Lee, then back
again.
“Why would you put this stuff on here?” Mayor Harper asked.
“My papa taught me to be proud of your work. I see no reason
to hide who I am and what I do Mr. Mayor.” Jerry Lee
answered, still smiling. “If you keep reading, it also says
I play a pretty mean piano as well.”
“You’re kidding.” Mayor Harper said.
“That I am sir. I thought a joke may break the tension.”
Jerry Lee said.
Mayor Harper laid the resume down on the desk slowly,
suddenly afraid to make any sudden movements.
“I don’t know what to tell you son. There’s no need for
someone of your particular… talents here.” Mayor Harper said
carefully.
Jerry Lee leaned forward, the wide smile finally fading from
his face.
“Now you see, that’s where you’re wrong mayor. Someone is
paying me an exorbitant amount of money to be here. Now I
could’ve sat in a van across the street and watched this
place. I could’ve placed taps on your phones and cameras in
your homes. Could’ve watched you through a sniper scope from
the top of Hank’s Hardware store across the street. But I
chose to treat you with respect, to approach you like a man.
Now you want to kick me out, say I’m not needed?” Jerry Lee
said, his voice taking on a sinister edge.
Jerry Lee stood up. He kicked the chair he was sitting in,
sending it sliding backwards across the carpet. It slammed
into the closed office door, lodging underneath the door
handle. Jerry Lee turned quickly back around towards the
mayor, pulling a long silenced pistol out of his coat and
pointing it at the Mayor’s head.
“Allow me to show you just how needed I am.” Jerry Lee said,
his voice full of malice.
To be continued…
