Part Two: The Part Before the Action Scene

“No…please…I have a family.” Mayor Harper said through his tears.

“I know all about your family Mayor. Wife Linda died five years ago, daughter Emily was a junior in college until she dropped out and moved back here.” Jerry Lee said, still pointing the gun at the Mayor’s head.

Mayor Harper looked up at him, his face going from scared to angry.

“What, you think you’re going to scare me by spouting off what you read in some damn file? You don’t know the first thing about my family, so leave them out of this!” Mayor Harper yelled.

A smile crept across Jerry Lee Louise’s face.

“You and Linda were thinking of getting a divorce before she died. You had found out she was seeing a man named Marvin, who worked in a factory making cell phones. They met up at the Motel Sundown a few miles down the highway every Thursday night. While you hosted the town meetings and listened to the citizens complain about zoning restrictions and pot holes, ol’ Marvin had his way with your wife.” Jerry Lee said.

Mayor Harper stared at him, his mouth open.

“How could you possibly…”

“Your daughter Emily was a straight A student at the University of New York. She was on the swim team, hundred meter freestyle if I’m not mistaken. She worked a part time job at a coffee shop there. Her best friend at college was a girl named Ashley who was studying to become a physicist. Emily told you that the reason she dropped out was because she was homesick and wanted to be near you. You’ve had your suspicions, as you should, that there was a lot more to the story. But you were so damn glad to have someone around to take care of you that you never pressed the issue.”

Mayor Harper didn’t say a word. He stared up at Jerry Lee Louise. For the first time the entire weight of the situation seemed to crash down on him. The tears were gone from his eyes.

“Who are you?” Mayor Harper asked quietly.

“For Gods sake man, I gave you a resume!” Jerry Lee exclaimed.

The mayor picked up the resume from his desk and looked at it again.

“You mean this is real?” He asked in disbelief.

“Every word. What, did you think I was just some sort of psycho or something?” Jerry Lee asked.

Mayor Harper looked back at Jerry Lee.

“Well… yeah.” The Mayor said meekly.

Jerry Lee shook his head in disbelief. He kept his pistol pointed at the Mayor’s head.

“Look, if you’re here to kill me then just do it. All I ask is that you leave my daughter alone. Please don’t hurt her.” Mayor Harper said.

Jerry Lee laughed bitterly.

“Oh come on Mayor, this isn’t a movie. Please don’t hurt my daughter? You can do better than that.” Jerry Lee said.

Mayor Harper stared at him, unsure of what to do.

“I WANT TO HEAR YOU DO BETTER!” Jerry Lee screamed, slamming his fist down on the desk hard.

Mayor Harper jumped slightly, startled by the sudden outburst.

“Well… I… my daughter is…” Mayor Harper stammered, trying to regain his composure.

“My daughter is innocent in whatever business you may have with…”

“Shut up for a second.” Jerry Lee said, interrupting Mayor Harper.

Jerry Lee cocked his head to the side, like a dog listening to a far off sound. He stood there for a long moment until a smile finally crept across his face.

“Finally.” Jerry Lee said.

Mayor Harper closed his eyes, straining to hear whatever it was that Jerry Lee had just heard. He thought he heard the sounds of cars stopping abruptly on the street below, but he couldn’t be sure. Jerry Lee snapped his fingers, getting the Mayor’s attention.

“Take your coat off and wrap it around your face. It’s time.” Jerry Lee said.

Mayor Harper started to pull his coat off.

“Time for what?” He asked.

Jerry Lee smiled as he spun his pistol in his hand.

“Time for the show to start.” Jerry Lee said.
