Part Three: Broken Glass Shatter

“Now Mayor Harper, no matter what happens in the next five minutes, you need to do one thing and one only, okay?” Jerry Lee asked.

“What is it?” Mayor Harper asked fearfully.

“Whatever I say you have to do it exactly and immediately. No questions, no hesitation. Do you understand?” Jerry Lee asked.

Mayor Harper nodded, his eyes full of fear.

“Okay, finish wrapping your coat around your face and listen to me closely as you do it.” Jerry Lee said.

“This is a AMT Hardballer pistol.” Jerry Lee said, holding up his pistol. “It’s stainless steel, got a five inch barrel, fully adjustable rear sight.”

As Jerry Lee was speaking something broke through the second story window, flying into the mayor’s office. It was followed quickly by similar objects breaking through the six other windows in the office.

“What the…” Mayor Harper uttered.

Mayor Harper was cut off as the objects began to spew gas into the room. Mayor Harper’s eyes went wide.

“Oh dear lord! Is that tear gas?” Mayor Harper exclaimed.

Jerry Lee slammed his fist down on the desk.

“Ignore it!” Jerry Lee yelled.

Jerry Lee’s eyes were swollen and red, tears pouring out of them. He didn’t seem bothered by it and held the pistol up again.

“This here ejects the clip. It’s a seven round, single column magazine. You slam it in, turn off the safety, take aim, and pull the trigger to fire. Do you understand everything I’ve told you about this weapon?” Jerry Lee asked.

“Yes, I think so.” Mayor Harper coughed as he answered, the tear gas effecting him even though he had his coat wrapped around his face.

A slamming sound came from the door to the mayor’s office. Someone was trying to come in, but Jerry Lee’s chair was still lodged beneath the door knob, holding the door shut for now. Jerry Lee put the pistol onto the desk and slid it towards Mayor Harper.

“It’s time to shake and bake baby. Grab the gun and follow me.” Jerry Lee said, a smile on his face.

Mayor Harper reached out with a shaking hand and picked up the gun. He held it up in front of his face, studying it, and then pointed it at Jerry Lee.

“We’re not going anywhere you psycho.” Mayor Harper said.

The door to the office shuddered from what had sounded like someone kicking it. Jerry Lee stared at Mayor Harper, a dry smile stretched across his lips. Tears streaked down his face from his irritated eyes.

“Mr. Mayor, right now there are at least twenty armed and dangerous men trying to get in here.” Jerry Lee stepped towards the Mayor as he continued to speak. “You just settle yourself down and we…”

“Stop right there!” Mayor Harper yelled, gesturing with the gun as he did.

Jerry Lee stopped. He was standing by the desk, looking across it at Mayor Harper. The smile was gone from his face. Another heavy blow landed on the door, causing the frame to crack and groan.

“Now listen here Mr. Harper. You are trying my patience and wasting time we don’t have. Now give me the gun and…”

“No! We’re gonna sit right here and I swear to the heavens that if you move again I will kill you.” Mayor Harper yelled.

Jerry Lee watched Mayor Harper for a long moment, and then spoke.

“You’re serious about this?” Jerry Lee asked.

“As a heart attack son.” Mayor Harper answered. “Now either you’re going to explain to me what the hell is going on or we’re going to wait for your tear gas firing friends to finish breaking the door open and I’ll get them to explain it to me.”

Jerry Lee sighed and straightened his bright blue suit, but said nothing.

“What, no smart remarks when you’re not the one holding the gun?” Mayor Harper asked sharply.

Jerry Lee’s body tensed up. His eyes took on a deadly edge as he stared at the Mayor. The tear gas had filled the room, swirling around both men. Jerry Lee ran his hand through his curly blonde hair, watching Mayor Harper closely. The banging continued on the office door, splintering the frame further. Jerry Lee focused on Mayor Harper’s eyes. After a moment he saw the mayor’s eyes twitch, the gas irritating them. Jerry Lee sprung into action.
