(Part Eight)
“Great, where to now?” Jackie spoke loudly into the cell
phone.
He had an especially hard time using cellular phones due to
the rather large size of his hand and the increasingly small
size of cell phones over the years. It also didn’t help that
the V8 engine of his huge, jacked-up, yellow Ford pickup had
the loudest exhaust available.
“They headed off across the field behind the church. That is
all I know.” Copper repeated for the third time, “If you had
something other than a monstrosity for a vehicle, you’d have
heard me say that the first time!”
“Bah, this is as real as it gets, son.” Jackie laughed and
patted Laelaps on the head. It had sucked that he had to
remove the passenger seat just to fit the beast inside, but
then again, it wasn’t like he was sitting in the original
factory driver’s seat.
“I’m sending a few of my brethren out to look for them. They
can’t have made it far!” Copper’s voice pounded into
Jackie’s ear.
“Laelaps could easily find them, you know?” Jackie sighed,
“He could find ‘em quicker than anyone. That’s what he
does.”
Bella and Copper were following Jackie in a black car. Bella
was driving, which would surely be a shock to anyone that
saw her. How many times did you see a person without a face
driving a car? Then again, how many times did you see a
person with no face? But… then again, how many times did you
see a Sasquatch driving a truck?
“Yes, but the Zar will attract less attention. They have
taken up residence in the bodies of police officers and have
access to their tools.” Copper explained.
Jackie shook all the errant thoughts from his mind.
“We have other agents in the field as well. They will find
them easily if the Zar do not.” Bella’s voice was suddenly
loud and clear inside Jackie’s mind. It was something of a
shock, again, but he thought perhaps he might just be
getting used to it.
“Good to hear. But what do we do for now?” Jackie shouted
over the roar of his engine.
“We wait.” Bella’s voice disappeared from his mind.
“Great, I hate waiting.” Jackie flipped the switch of his
radio to a country station.
